Hotone Nano Reviews?

I've been looking at the Hotone British Invasion for a lunchbox amp. How does this compare to some of Joyo's or other small amp maker's offerings. This one's supposed to be based off the Vox AC30, but I would prefer a decent Plexi-ish tone. Do any of you have experience in this department?

Hotone Nano Reviews?

I’ve played several Hotone micro amps and although neat, I see them as a novelty item.

Mooer Micro preamps are way better imho but the Joyo Bantamps have my full attention.

I saw that video, but sadly I don't have enough monthly data to watch the whole thing. I'll have to wait until I can get to the library.

As for the Hotones being a novelty item, what do you mean?

Edit: I also heard the Joyo VIVO (5150) was a lot better than their earlier amps, can anyone confirm this?

One trick ponies and not that good at it. Without effects they are really, really bland. Sure they’ll drive a 4x12. Sure they’re cute and all your friends will go “wow” but they lack character.

These can stand on their own. For practice.

Re: Hotone Nano Reviews?

I hear people rave about the Micro series of Orange, but I don't really care for the Orange sound. In a perfect world I would just have a miniature version of the JCM800 I already have, but I can't find anything like that.

Joyo and Mooer are pretty good at Marshallesk tones.

Re: Hotone Nano Reviews?

I was looking at the Jackman, but all the sound clips I hear of it aren't the best, the VIVO seems to have the most passable tone. But then again I hear the 12AX7 tube that comes with them isn't that great. Maybe I'll have to swap it out for something of higher quality and see how that goes. Still, $159 plus however much for a tube isn't that bad.

Re: Hotone Nano Reviews?

So I found plenty of people online saying that replacing the tubes make it sound amazing, so I might buy a Tung Sol 12AX7 to tame the harshness a bit. But I'll have to play it for a while before I make any decisions.

I bought the Mojo Diamond (Fender Dlx) on a whim. It was impossible to tell from videos what volume one could expect for his chosen tone. Turned out to be a great tone (into a 2X12 WGS loaded cabinet), but gave nowhere enough volume to do anything but play quietly at home. Sat it aside for a couple of months. Then I came across a like new Fryette PS-2 for $500 and thought "I can make use of this, given I like to try different setups". Figured it would be nice to attenuate my 5E3 and perhaps another amp . It also has the capability to Boost an amp's output up to 50 watts. Fryette warns against using it with certain designs of ss amps (those that do not have the speaker output grounded). Checked w/ Hotone and was told the Nano series DO have grounded speaker outputs and it would be fine to use w/ the PS-2. Hooked them up and WOW, a 50 watt Hotone Mojo Diamond! Couldn't believe how great it sounded. Now I've always liked the sound of a Vox AC30 but never wanted to deal with the 70 lb. combo. For another $99, I bought the British Invasion Nano and like it even better than the Mojo Diamond, and I'm very much a Fender guy. Now I have the nearly identical AC30 sound. Dare you to tell the difference in a blind test.

So, after being a bit too wordy, I'll summarize by saying these Hotone Nano series get a huge thumbs up from me! (As does the Fryette PS-2). Maybe I'll get a Purple Wind (Marshall) at some point?

Listen to the A/B of the British Invasion and AC30:

Oh, and BTW, it may be a novelty without the PS-2, but with it, this is a for real giggable setup.

Re: Hotone Nano Reviews?

I love the Heart Attack..never heard any amp/pedal replicate a dual recto sound as accurately :bigthumb:

it's definitely a one trick pony, but what it does it does brilliantly.
