Hotplate with a combo amp?

Hello out there!

I was wondering if a hotplate will only work with a head and speaker cabs? I read the THD info sheet and it states the hotplate is placed between the amp and the speakers? Is it possible to do that with a 5150 combo? Can you break it down for me! :)

Thanks,

Jon

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

I should work assuming that the speaker cable isn't hardwired to the amp.

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

yeah it should work, you just have to unplug the speaker wire and then get another cable to go from the amp to the hotplate and then plug both cables in.

If you ever watch the tonight show, the guitarist Kevin Eubanks does the same thing with his combo and it still sounds great.

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

im not sure if the 5150 is closed back but if it is that might create a problem, i'm not familiar with the layout of those amps though

look in your owners manual, should tell you where the speaker jack is

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

5150 Is closed back, you'll have to open it up, but I know JFromHouston had his like that.

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

It'll work as long as you can unplug the speakers from the amp. You need to run a lead from the amp's speaker output to the attenuator and another from the attenuator to the speakers. I've often thought about getting an attenuator to use with my JTM60 combo - It sounds awesome cranked but it's too loud for the average pub gig.

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

make sure the ohm rating is correct on the hotplate to work with your speaker. I am not sure if that is adjustable or not.

Re: Hotplate with a combo amp?

I have the same combo, and I was checking a hot plate out earlier. you could either A) use a hot plate with the internal speakers at 16 ohms, or B) use a hot plate in the EXTERNAL speaker jack for an 8 ohm Cab AFTER you've disconnected the internal speakers. the external jack has a switch that is activated when you plug a 16 0hm cab in, it swtiches to half the impedence (16 + 16/2 = 8)
