hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

Reload in 5

Just Ultimate Slacker
So I have an antiquity in the bridge of my SE One and the sound is very nice (I play at mostly a classic rock kinda gain level)
I have only gotten to use it once at practice and once playing.
But I do get hum (obviously) and wondered something. Would a hotter p90 have the same effect on raising hum as turning up the gain on my amp?
in other words, do both raise the hum level the same for the same amount of gain?
Lower output on gain level 5 has same overall gain as higher output on gain level 3, so is the hum the same?

Am I making any sense?
I just haven't EVER used single coils before.

Re: hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

i understand what you are asking but dont really know the answer. i kinda think that the hum is about the same on my strat pups between low and high output. like an ssl1 and ssl3, the qp has more hum for sure. i only have vintage p90's so i cant test for ya.

i would shield the guitar before you do anything else

Re: hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

I think that the hum is about the same. But with a lower output pickup, the hum is more distorted.

Re: hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

I have an Antiquity P90 as the pickup in my PRS SE One. I have also tried higher output P90-style single coils and the custom shop JB90.

Opting for a higher output pickup will definitely alter the dynamic response of the guitar and not necessarily for the better.

If you are not satisfied with the SD Ant, consider an SP90-3n (yes, neck position model) or one of the Lindy Fralin slightly overwound models.

Shut up and play. No one cares about the hum. Bring the RAWK.

Re: hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

I've had good luck so far with the P-rails I put in a LP copy. They made a little noise in my old amp but nothing major. I'm not so sure but the rail next to it might have helped. I have yet to play it through my new amp. I do like the way a P90 sounds. I don't get to play it much anymore, must be time to get into another band just so I can play it again. Like Aceman said you don't hear any hum while your actually playing. At least that's been my expierience.

Re: hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

Does the Ant have a plastic or metal cover? If it's plastic, put a piece of aluminum foil inside the cover for shielding. Poke out holes for the pole pieces.

Re: hotter P90 vs more gain vs noise

I've never found the hum from a P-90 to be objectionable. Yes, it is there. And while you're NOT actually playing, it certainly can be noticed. But nobody listens to you when you're not playing anyway.

Like Ace said...Just play the darn thing and stop whining.
