How a 5-year old changes a pickup

Thought you might get a laugh out of this....a few weeks back I involved my kids in restoring an old guitar, and ever since the 5-year old has been wanting to do it again. I was chatting to him about how I'd like to change out the middle pickup in my one 'ground floor' guitar, but things were moving too slow for him, so while I was out he decided to do it himself.

So..when a five year old changes a pickup his approach is radical - hes doesn't need a liberator, he only needs one tool

...and he simply jams it into the middle pickup route and by the magic of leverage out it comes in under 5 seconds....albeit not quite intact

I could hardly berate the little guy for trying to help but we did have a nice calm chat after I'd gone for a very long walk to cool off. That said it did spur on the project - I routed it out to accept a PASTK-1N, fitted a pickguard to cover the damage, installed a superswitch with Arties switching scheme, and am very pleased with the finished item.

I also installed a wall hanger, high up :)

ROFL!!! As upset as I would be initially....I have to say it's pretty cool that a 5-year-old is into tweaking guitars! ;-)

Thanks man ... its my #1 practice axe that I've slowly upgraded over a couple of years, its the one I keep on our ground floor so as to have a guitar to hand.

It started out a very clean MIJ RG470, it now has an original floyd with a brass block in place of the original Lo-TRS. The guard is a mirror guard I had custom made to fit the 470 and PATBs - the bridge is a PATB2 and the switching is

1. Neck
2. Neck top coil and bridge back coil parallel
3. Neck top coil and bridge back coil series
4. Bridge Parallel
5. Bridge series

I'm really enjoying the PASTK-1N in the neck - it required about a 1/4-3/8inch extra route to fit in, but the warm chimey tones are worth it in spades.

I've a few bits still to do...the guard needs a little trimming round the trem route and the trem posts could do with upgrading or regrinding if I can ever be bothered.

You child displays an aptitude for guitar mods. Perhaps there was something about the sound of the middle pickup that was displeasing, but couldn't be explained with a 5-year-old's vocabulary. Please, find out if your child has yet formed an fresh opinion on paper-and-oil vs. polypropylene tone capacitors that hasn't been tainted by message board discussions!

Re: How a 5-year old changes a pickup

does the child know which pickups Van Halen used on the first album?

does he know if Blackouts are really better than EMG's? What about EMG-X's?

O Speak To Us, Tonechild!

Sorry for the incurred damage, but thats awesome that your son is interested in gee-tars, as my boys say it. My 5yo son is turning 6 in december, and me and mom are thinking about getting him a little red Strat that we saw during a walkthrough at GC. :)

At least the guitar turned out nice. It looks really good. Good thing you put that wallhanger up so high.

We both disliked the middle pickup on that axe, so I guess it had to go - he just forced the issue :)

When he wakes up tomorrow, and if he's in a good mood I'll ask him :)

Re: How a 5-year old changes a pickup

He prefers blackouts to EMGs as he likes the shiny metal covers

When asked about the EVH and slash tones he did this :smack: and walked off.

Re: How a 5-year old changes a pickup

you must be very proud.

when i have children, they'll now need to work very hard to impress me.

i'm not normally a big fan of the ibby style guitars, but yours is quite interesting; good idea on the high wall-hanger
