How bad are these!?

how bad are these 3 way switches?

I just ordered a H-H harness from Szcechuan ( with two you get eggroll) for my Jackson that has these funky 3 way switches. It was 15 bucks less than the next one I could find with a standard Fender switch ( better, but not the best either). The pots are good- CTS- and so is the tone cap. The wiring looks good.

Am I, like, definitely going to have a problem with this ?

Wish I could help but I've never used them...hope they are just as good as your eggrolls...provided you get good eggrolls :jester:

Re: How bad are these!?

Those switches aren't horrible, but they're cheap for a reason. I recently replaced one in my Tele because it was a PITA to work on.

That cap is a .047uf which may be too much rolloff depending on your tastes. I like .022 for pretty much everything except neck humbuckers and master tones on H-H which get a .015uf.

Re: How bad are these!?

My Ibanez RG's come stock with them
I swapped them because I wanted different options with different switches
but they are OK, quiet, no click
If you don't like them then its fairly easy to swap em

Has Western civilization gotten so lazy they're now ordering take-out guitar controls? Seriously? Is it that complicated to do it yourself? The money you wasted could've gotten a better switch at least, and I'll be surprised if those are real CTS pots and not "Chinese TeeHee Potentiometers".

They can figure out cell phones & iPads, but seem to have an inherent fear of something as low tech as a soldering iron.

Yes I agree, because everyone knows that good CTS pots come from Taiwan.

Those switches are ****, generally speaking and in IME. All but one that I've had have needed replacement when under 5 years old. These were all in MIJ Fenders of the '90's. The one that has lasted is in my '94 Godin.

OTOH, the only open blade switch I've ever killed was one that I learned to solder on as a teenager, and that was in and out of guitars at least half a dozen times in its life. It became more and more beat up the more I resoldered it. Eventually (as in almost 20 years later), one of the solder tabs finally broke off. Even then, I could have jury-rigged it. But the switch was old, stiff, and looked like hell, so I just retired it. Long story short: Open blade switches are pretty durable and idiot-proof.

It's possible that the box switch you have won't break, at least not immediately. But it more likely than not will break some day down the line. When depends on how often, and how hard, you use it.

But even if it happens to be a well made switch, I find sealed switches annoying to work on, as I can't simply look at it to see what tabs do what. That's important to me, as I am not really knowledgeable in electronics. Without knowing the tabs by heart, I can at least look at a blade switch and see how it works, therefore how it needs to be wired. I can't do that with a boxed switch.

They also don't tolerate sloppy work and repeated solderings as well as the open blade switches. They are far more flimsy.

Bottom line: if a guitar came with a sealed switch like that, I would replace it the first time I happened to have the guitar opened up. I wouldn't open the guitar up just to replace one, though. In your case, you have it all opened up, so I would recommend replacing it.

I had a switch like that in my old korean washburn no problems in 11 years of playing.

Re: How bad are these!?

Never used one. IMO, it's preference. Yes switches do what they say, they switch. But you can get a crap one out of 50 or 100. I bought and used cheap switches and pots by DiMarzio and never have had an issue with them. Pretty sure they were made in China. The build looks ok from the pic you posted from what I can tell. Rock that $15 dollar part and watch out for them overseas egg rolls lol. May give you montezumas revenge.

Re: How bad are these!?

I'd say they are probably right on par with your guitar playing.

Re: How bad are these!?

You'll be fine, it's as well made as most of the pre made harnesses you find on eBay and you can always just spend 5 bucks & get a better switch. Pots are good, joints are fine, Orange drop cap, all that is pretty standard. The switch is a cheap import one but that's because it was made in China & that's just what they've got? Just because it's not a Oak Grigsby or Fender switch doesn't mean that its going to fail, I've seen those things last almost 20 years without issues & I've seen the switches that you'd find in a U.S.A. Strat crap out in months? If I were you I'd just toss it in, the switch does absolutely nothing to the guitars sound and if its ends up giving you problems change it, but chances are you're going to be quite happy with it as is. After its in the guard nobody will know the difference anyway, including you...
