How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

Hi All?

How do you fellas think my ash bodied hardtail Fat Strat would sound with a set of Phat Cats in it? I love the P-90 sound of my Godin LG but I wonder if the ash would be to bright? Any one ever heard a set in ash?

Jim

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

I have heard them in a Maple Jazz box and they were not too bright at all. I think it sounds like a decent idea.

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

I had a MM Axis with P-90s at one time. It was not overly bright at all. People call swamp ash "bright", but I didn't get that in my Axis. My experience with swamp ash is that it has pronounced highs and lows, with little midrange.

Thought I already replied to this, ohh well...

Put a 59 in the bridge and a phat cat in the neck, Im not sure how good a phat cat would be in the bridge. IMO...

Yeah you did Mephis :laugh2: . Thanks for all the extra work!!! Ha ha! Why that combo ? Interesting to hear that even in maple it was'nt too bright. I would'nt have thought. Hmmmm. Maybe the 59s need to go back.

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

Would the spacing on a phat cat correspond with a fender bridge though? and do they make a trem spaced Phat cat?

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

My Strat is a Hardtail so its not trem spaced. I'm dead on the poles on the HBs I've put in.

I know that Evan uses a pair of Phat Cats in his Ibby JS series guitar. So they must work pretty good. :)

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

Because If you are wanting a nice balanced tone, I think that'd be great.

But if you want full on P-90 action, you could do double phatties.

I suggested the 59 because you were worried about it being to bright. I figure you could rythm with the P-90 and turn on the bridge for a solo or what not, I dont like 2 of the same pickup on a guitar, it just seems pointless, unless you like 2 nearly identical sounds.

Hmm!
This is sounding better all the time! A Fattie with Fatties! I think I'll send the 59s back and install a set of fatties and see how she sounds.

Actually, for a nice, balanced tone, a calibrated set would be the mutt's nuts.

Even if it weren't a calibrated set and you ended up using two of the exact same model pickups (a pair of bridge position PC's for example), the sound of each pickup is far from the same as its neck or bridge counterpart. This is simply due to the pickup's position and the excursion of the string at each given position.

Think aout it. ;)

The Phat Cat in the bridge is definately not too bright, I have a set in a maple semi-hollow and they sound great for everything from clean jazz, country, and funk, all the way to high gain hard rock.

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

Hope you're right Jim. I sent back the 59s and ordered the Phat Cats. Does anyone Know if I should change the Pots to 250K or will 500K do?

Jim :cool2:

Re: How 'bout a Double Fat Strat with Phat Cats?

I dig the 500k pots in my sheraton with the Phats. If it is too bright, I'd stick with a 500k in the neck and a 250k for the tone. :)
