How close would this mod get me to a pearly gates?

I have a 59/hybrid i could just never get along with. It's not saleable due to having done some things to the baseplate mounting legs. So i figured since it;s prettyt useless to me as is, i might try this rather than buy a PG which i can't easily afford anyways. The PG is A2 and 8.1k. Not sure if the 59/H is the same gauge and type of wire, but if i ordered a A2 off ebay for it and unwound the hotter coil to match the lower one, which would give me the same 4k per coil as the PG, does anyone have an idea how close it would be to sounding like a PG?

It won't work. The coils in hybrids use different wire type on each bobbin. The PG wind is neither a 59 nor a Custom, so you won't get there by removing Custom winds until the resistance is the same. For a start, you'd have to know the number of turns on each bobbin and unwrap by turn count to make them even, not by resistance. But despite that, you won't make a hybrid into a PG that way.

Yep, different wire gauges on the two coils. But if you can't bond with the stock Hybrid and you're thinking about a mag swap anyway, you might think about trying an A3. That'll lower the output and should take some of the beef out of the low end, with some crisp/warm vintagey character in the highs. Not saying it'll be like a PG bridge, but IMO it might get you closer than an A2.

You could try your scheme and put it in the neck!

Ok, thanks all. And it's HSS, i don't want a HB in the neck. While i'm here tho, how about some thoughts on the PG bridge and how it would compare to sat a dimarzio 36th and SD 59 in a HSS alder/rosewood strat?

Just had a thought....what would it sound like if i wired the 59/hybrid in parallel with the different coils? Has anyone done this? I'm not really too concerned about the noise, but wondering what it would sound like wired like that both by itself and as far as B+M quack. Anyone tried it?

Never tried my Hybrids in parallel so I can't offer any advice on that. One option would be to wire it for autosplit in position 2. That way you'd still have strong lead tone in pos 1, plus better quack in pos 2. Unless you're used to singlecoil bridge pickups and don't want thicker lead tone- in which case, never mind. Just tossing out ideas.

I always autosplit with HSS. It's how it is now. (with a dimarzio) But i'm wondering what the 59/H would be like by itself in parallel because my main objective is a lower output along the lines of a PAF and it would be nice if i could make use of the 59/H rather than spend more $ on yet another parts drawer pickup. I just have no idea how that would work with different coils like that. Might be very interesting but thats why i asked. Was hoping someone had tried it.

You have the pickup. Try it and let us know how it works. That way someone else will know whether or not it worked for you.
