How do I know which is north and south on a particular coil for the wires?

Here is what I am dealing with. Ibanez mutt has a rail style humbucker in the neck. Thought it was a Dimarzio and wired it as such but it is buzzing like it it split. Suspect it is something else and i have the wire code wrong.
I can pull the 4 conductors apart and find which pair goes with which coil but how do I know what is what on the north and south on each coil?
As of now with the Duncan wired black hot green ground and the red and white together and the neck wired Red Ground Green hot with the black and white together it is in phase. I am assuming the Red and Green are one coil and will know this when I split the Black and white then check continuity between them. If that is the case how do I know what is what on the other coil to put the coils in phase?

Just swap the two wires on one coil. If it stops humming that’s the right wiring direction.

Then if it’s out of phase with another pickup reverse the hot and ground.

A lot of Ibanez pickups are made by DiMarzio. Their colors are red=hot, green=ground and black and white together. I’m not sure if Ibanez uses different combinations.

Hello.

I certainly am no expert here i.e. only just started mucking about with pickups swaps. However: I also ran into one or two problems when trying to mix and match a Jackson stock (neck) pickup with a SD Invader (bridge). I somehow managed to busk my way through this though. Below is a good article that I found. I also successfully used the multimeter test.
