How do I make the pin jumper of an AHB2 into a mini-switch or push/pull?

Hello

As the description of the pickup says here on SD, the pin jumper on the back of the Blackouts AHB-2 can be wired into an external switch or a push/pull knob, to avoid having to unscrew the pup out each time I want to switch, and instead, have an accesible booster kind of option.

My question, how do I do it? I mean what do I need to buy (cable and the pot I'm guessing, but any specifics?)
I'd like to try and do it myself, instead of taking the gtr to the tech

Thank you in advance

That jumper is just a PC style jumper like you find on PC motherboards. You can buy single pin PC connectors at Radio Shack. You could also pull the wires for the hard drive light and power light from a dead pc and use the wire and connectors from that. All you would need is a two pole SPST switch to turn the boost on/off.

Of the jumper on the pup? Sorry no, I don't have it disassembled atm.

EDIT: Just dug this pic off from the interwebz though (app it was a missing diagram):

Also, if you want to read the description of what I'm talking about (bottom of the page):

I would just use single pin or double pin push-on PC connectors, rather than soldering anything to the pins. Here is a picture of a double pin push-on power LED that came from an old PC. Just remove the LED and wire in a SPST switch.

Any toggle switch will do?
Yes because the switch just completes the circuit. I believe the reason why they chose a 6 pole switch is so the diagram would use the same poles whether a toggle or push/pull pot was used.

i snagged one from an old fan assembly i had lying around(it's on the left) and the switch i got from ebay:

Is the AHB-2 Metal in normal mode, just like the AHB-1? In terms of tone and output.
Then obviously its pushed harder when in high out put mode.

Re: How do I make the pin jumper of an AHB2 into a mini-switch or push/pull?

Dang now that I have Purchased the AHB-1s set I read about these AHB-2 PU's that are specifically for metal. Story of my life, Similar stuff happened when I Purchased my First Ibanez Guitar.
Out of curiosity how much of a boost does the Jumper enable anyway?
Does it specifically just Boost the dB or does it enhance or distort the signal somewhat?
I do have a Custom 6 string guitar with the HSH config and currently I am using a SH-8 Invader but I have been so impressed with my AHB-1s I may just replace the complete HSH set if I can find a S that works with the AHB-2 Setup.

FYI The 2 wire I see pictured with the connector is the exact same as I have seen on all computer Desktop cases they use those for the Power and HD Lights, Power Buttons and reset buttons also, IN case somone was wondering where to aquire some.

Re: How do I make the pin jumper of an AHB2 into a mini-switch or push/pull?

W jumper on it distorts like hell- even on a clean Fender channel
The saturation of the pup by itself is sweet- BUT it takes a lot of patience to make that get along w +dist (stacking distortion)

..At least IME

It'd be good to hear other opinions

Ok Thanks, I know exactly what you are talking about when I first got my GNX4 and the MFXSupermodels CD I was playing with some Marshall amps and cabs and had a Stompbox Activated and it sounded real bad till I figured it out, but with a little of each set (Some amp Some Stompbox) I was able to get some really awesome Sound
I think I may just have to start saving and looking online for possibly a used AHB-2 Single or set to install in my Customized RG 570 I created.
I like the ability to have the ability to use a Push/Pull pot to switch between the 2 options, That really opens up the range and ability to get a specific unique sound.

i've tried both and the AHB-1 is no slouch when it comes to metal, the AHB-2 chugs better but it doesn't have much of a usable clean tone even when the jumper isn't engaged, i also noticed the AHB-1 had much better pinch harmonics over the AHB-2...

Re: How do I make the pin jumper of an AHB2 into a mini-switch or push/pull?

Well thats Good to know Thanks for the Reply, The PH's are one of a number of things I found were drastically improved once I Installed the AHB-1s.
I was and am still Impressed with the improvement not only in Tone but Sustain, The increase in frequency range, And the quality of the PM'd Notes whether it be lightly PM'd or exessive PM'd notes, Even Stuff I would not expect to sound good has actually caused me to re-evaluate what I can use in songs now as weird as that sounds.
So From what you Posted Xntrick, I would be quite Limited when using the AHB-2 Model PU's to only Heavy Distorted/Overdriven as anything I may want to do that is super clean would still have some hint of distortion to it?
Thanks for all the awesome Information pertaining to the AHB-2 PU's and the info on jumper settings and output sound.

LOL Just thinking about people seeing my age and wondering what is wrong here, I found the older I have become the heavier and harder my musical tastes has become, Which I know is exactly opposite of how people were when I was young, I find I always seem to be quite off from the society norm almost all of my life.

AHB-3 is also supposedly an upgrade over the 2, or so I've read. So, check that one also.

Thanks I will do, I wish the sound files for the AHB's were working as I wanted to get an Idea of Tone before I bought the AHB-1s I did but found the links either were missing or were bad links.

I suppose the best thing to do is research more online and see if any of my local music stores may possibly have some AHB-2 or AHB-3 Installed in any of their guitars so I can get something to compare them to.

correct, the AHB-2 doesn't have a good clean tone even when you turn down the volume..that's why i like the EMG-81X, it can go from clean to metal quite well...

Yup that's about the best thing one can do.

Second best I'd say is watching (hearing) YT vids.. I was VERY reluctant of the 3 because I don't like Slipknot's gtr tone at all (and that genre, whatever that is) but I've been liking the AHB3 on YT the past couple of days..

Maybe I'll snag one for modding another gtr in the coming months.

Great diagram,

I have a blackout hss set up that I am hoping to do the same.. ish

When toggle is down all hss are at low power, when toggle is up, the jumper is engaged on all hss blackouts.

Can this be done by multi stacking 1 wire from each pickup to 1 pole on the toggle and the same for the other pole? (like the picture)

Cheers

Re: How do I make the pin jumper of an AHB2 into a mini-switch or push/pull?

you would need a 3pole switch for all 3 pickups to close the loop, they can't all use a common wire like a ground.
