How do you price used pedals?

I've got a problem... a friend here at work is trying to clear out his recently deceased brother's gear. He ran a visual and audio special effects shop in So Cal. (You've seen his work in many movies.)

Anyway, among a lot of high end mixers and other recording gear, he had a box full of effects pedals - Boss, Ibanez, DOD, Roland, etc. He's offering to give me first dibs on the pedals because he knows I "collect" them. Honestly, I would love to have them all...

I want to give him a fair price for these. I know he would sell them to me for whatever I offered, but I don't want to feel like I'm ripping him off. How do you guys set prices on your used gear?

I know there is a list price, and then there is a street price (which you can usually find in places like MF). But these would be too high for used gear. So is 50% of street fair?

I would really appreciate any thoughtful input you guys can give me.

Thanks

Re: How do you price used pedals?

Depends on what they are...best thing to do in a hurry is to search for ended ebay auctions.

Most Boss and DOD pedals are gonna be very little value wise and the roland stuff is hit or miss...

Re: How do you price used pedals?

I'm right there with Christian. Other than some of the Boss and DOD stuff, things like vintage script logo MXR Phase 90's will catch stupid amounts of money. The old Boss analog delay and Ibanez analog delay are also fetching a good buck these days. It's all dictated by supply and demand but still, some of the prices are just rediculous.

Re: How do you price used pedals?

An old Boss OD1 is fetching a lot of money these days as well.... The old early 80's one with 2 knobs... As is the Boss Dimention C pedal...

Mostly any Boss pedals from the early 90's-present i try and pay about half price of new or less... Here in Canada i have bought many used Boss and DOD pedals over the years..... i have a large collection of that stuff now.... maybe 20 boss and dod pedals...

That's what I'd do - get a list of the pedals and find out what they're selling for on eBay. Also Google them to see what used gear dealers are selling them for. You should be able to get some idea of a fair price.

The important thing is that you know you don't want to rip him off. If you make a genuine effort to ascertain a fair value of the items (as you are) and you agree on a price you're both happy with, then you've done the right thing. Ultimately that's what matters.

Re: How do you price used pedals?

If you post a list at all im sure every single one of these guys can tell you how much, and whether its worth buying in an instant. Other than that just do some ebay research, im sure with an effects studio your bound to find a gem or 2

Okay... it's hand scrawled

Boss
  • OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion
  • DSF-2
  • RPS-10
  • SE-50
  • DSD-2 Digital Sampler/Delay
  • HM-2 Heavy Metal
  • DF-2 Super Feedbacker & Distortion
  • TU-12H Tuner
DOD
  • FX35 (Octoplus)
Roland
  • CE-300 Chorus
  • Reverb
Ibanez
  • TS-6 Tube Sceamer
  • CPL compressor/Limiter
  • SML Super Metal
Heet
  • E-bow (I know this isn't a pedal)

I'm not expecting miracles - but if anyone has either price type advice - or "is this a good pedal" type advice - for anything on this list - I would appreciate it.

I will do some research when I get a chance - but work has me swamped right now.

Re: How do you price used pedals?

OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion-$35
DSF-2-I have never heard of this unit, no idea...
RPS-10-$125
SE-50-$75
DSD-2 Digital Sampler/Delay-$70, close to $90 if it is MIJ
HM-2 Heavy Metal-$30, close to $50 if it is MIJ
DF-2 Super Feedbacker & Distortion-$60-75, close to $100 or so if it is MIJ
TU-12H Tuner-$30

DOD

FX35 (Octoplus)-$50

Roland

CE-300 Chorus-$125
Reverb-which reverb???

Ibanez

TS-6 Tube Sceamer-never heard of a TS-6, a TS5 however is around $25 and for a TS-9 it depends on the age...
CPL compressor/Limiter-$35
SML Super Metal-$40

Heet

E-bow (I know this isn't a pedal)-$60-80

That is a rough guide and FWIW, that is abot what he woudl get on ebay if he sold them that way...

Re: How do you price used pedals?

Thanks Guy... that's great!

Not sure about the Tube Screamer - as I said, he scrawled the list. He has the pedals in the trunk of his car - I'll need to go give a look.

Re: How do you price used pedals?

That Boss DSF-2 might be written wrong...I have nver heard of that unit before and there was a TS-808, TS-9, TS-10 and TS-5 Tubescreamer...never a 6

I'm thinking the DSF-2 might actually be the DF-2 (Super Feedback) - he may have read it wrong

As for the Tube Screamer - it looked like a 0 with a little bit on top which led me to think it was a 6. But it could have been a 9.

I'll try to see them in person tomorrow.
