I was impressed by the Tribute Legacy I tried last year. They have US G&L pickups and their wiring which means instead of 2 tones you get a bass and treble tone for all 3 pickups. Very vibrant, but you need to try yourself really.

They compare pretty well, though the so-called 'swamp' ash models seem way too heavy for that to be the case. I'd grab a cheaper basswood model if I was to get one.

I haven't compared the Strats and Legacies, but I have compared the Tribute ASATs to MIM Teles, and the Tributes I tried were FAR FAR FAR better than not only the MIMs but also just about everything in Fender's line, from the Squiers all the way up to the 52 Reissue. The only Fender I tried that I thought was as good/better playing than a Tribute was the Aerodyne Telecaster. (I turned it down because it was too far away from a traditional Tele sound, but it does sound great for what it is.)

The G&Ls I've played in the past have been much better than any (non-custom shop) Fender I've played. They sound great and feel great.
On a side note though, I had a G&L ASAT Deluxe with a bigsby and it would not stay in tune. If you never used the tremolo you were okay, but once you used it you'd have to retune. I returned it.
