How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

Hey guys. I'm really trying to build up my picking speed. Yngwie can pick insanely fast, as you all know. Now what type of picking style does he use? Just alternate or circular picking? He can fly up and down the neck so damn fast and I know i won't be able to do that for a long time, but can someone tell me the techniques he uses?

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

He mainly uses sweep picking... which involves playing 2 or more notes on adjacent strings using the same picking direction for all of the notes. Yngwie uses this technique for his 6 string arpeggio stuff.. its just literally making your left and right hand flow up and down the strings at exactly the same tempo in a sweeping action... Its probably one of the hardest techniques to master.. deffinatly the hardest I've come across

Good luck withit... it'll take time but you'll get there if you practise enough, the only bit of advice I can give is if your building speed USE A METRONOME!

well many of the arpeggios he does are the same and he just practices them so many times it becomes the easiest thing in the world, hell he only uses about 10 arpeggios in about all his million songs just in diffrent keys. As for as picking goes most is alternate picking

I really don't know what kind of picking technique he uses. One of the reasons he's so fast is that he uses a scallopped fretboard. Not that he wouldn't still be faster than all of us if he were stuck with a normal neck. The scallopped fretboard makes it where you don't have to push the string all the way to the wood. The drawback is that if you do, you will bend the string out of tune. It's not for everyone. Many of the other virtuosos can play (nearly) as fast as him with normal fretboards. He just perfected playing with scallops. I don't know if I'd reccommend getting them or not. I would definitely reccommend the practicing, though.

One thing you could do is to play (if I can explain this right) on fret one with your index finger, then fret two with your middle finger, fret three with your ring finger and then fret four with your pinkie, working your way from the low E string to the high E string, alternating pick strokes as you go (down, up, down, up on each string). When you finish the high E, slide down to A (on the same string) and work back, pulling off to the previous finger and working your way back up to the low E string. Don't try to do this fast at first. Just concentrate on each note; make sure it sounds good. It's kind of boring, but it will really help your speed and accuracy rather quickly. Just do it about 30 minutes a day. Your hands may get tired at first, but you'll get used to it. Before long, you'll be speeding through it.

I marvel at anyone who can play with some degree of speed because I can't. The problem is my picking hand. My left hand can fly up and down the fretboard with the best of them, but I can't seem to free up my right hand to pick with some degree of speed for the life of me. I know speed isn't everthing but it would be nice to have it when called for.

First of all like said above , you have to spent hours and hours in the woodshed with only a metrone and a guitar , so you would have to throw your girlfried out :) stop working and you won´t have much time to be on this forum . I have read somewhere that people like him play about 8 to 10 hours a day :smack:

he uses for the arpeggio´s sweep picking , but he also uses this when he switches from a string , so he mostly plays scales parts and repeats them over mostly the third and fifth of the scale he uses

Lets say he plays 3 notes of the scale on one string (so down/up/down) and then when he goes to the next string he sweeps to the next (so this would also be down/up/down) and not (up/down/up) like most of the people do

This is really very hard to learn if u are used to do otherwise

As for the scalloped neck , I have one guitar that has it , you can´t go any faster , but your notes will sound better/clearer expacialy the high ones , if you play as fast as YM then you will need one to hear all notes clear

At last , there´s is your potentional picking speed not everyone can go as fast as Yngwie or Michael Angelo, otherwise we would all be famous and there´s no fun in that . But you will become a faster guitar player that´s for sure.

He has some video´s/dvd´s on the market where he and others explain everything

Here are some good ones to learn to play fast

Yngwie Malmsteen ; Play Loud 1/2/3 movement (box 3 dvd´s)
John Petrucci ; Rock discipline
Michael Angelo ; Speed Kills

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

I've been using a metronome and the techniques mentioned. I guess I just have to keep on at it! Thanks for the tips and the DVD ideas. I'll definitely check out Petrucci's DVD. Can anyone gimme some info on this Michal Angelo guy? Never heard of him.

dang......most of the people here are clueless......sorry for this post....

Blues dude, there is no secret to picking fast but practicing and getting familars with your scales or common runs that you use.

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

Practice sweeps and licks slow with little distortion for 8 hours a day. Thats what I did
and I can nail most Yngwie songs.

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

I know there's no secret, I was just looking for tips vs. trying to find everything on my own. Maybe since you didn't see that, you're the one that is clueless.

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

I just bought a new metronome 2 weeks ago. I was using the computer for a metronome before, but i moved it outta my room so i could build my model planes. Was without a metronome for a month or two. Since i bought a new one a few weeks ago i have increased speed by nearly 8 BPM and i was already pretty fast.

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

Oh yeah, practice all of Yngwie's scales up and down. Just keep playing 16th notes up and down the scale and increase your speed slowly, a few BPM a week and the speed will come easy. As for sweeping, once you have the tecnique down it's pretty easy to increase speed, a few BPM a week the same way as the scales. Just keep practicing, there is no secret to speed.

Michael Angelo was the guitarplayer of a 80´s hairband called Nitro , now he gives clinics for Dean Guitars everywhere in the world. He´s really fast and uses all the picking types there are .

There are a lot of video´s on the internet from him playing his special made left/right handed guitar . He can play left and righthanded , even at the same time :smack:

he is also a very good teacher on the speed kills video , learns you a lot !!

He has also this flipping hand-thing that´s realy strange , plays one note of a scale regular and the other note with his hand on the other side of the arm of the guitar , looks realy strange , on video looks like it´s not real but I saw him life , and he did it

He is also a realy nice guy , spoke to him a few times

Angelo is fast! Much faster than Yngwie. He also has a very interesting speed picking tecnique.

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

This tech with the metronome is great. I have been doing it for the last 3-4 weeks. I did not think doing that drill so slow would help, but it really has. Just go up a click a week. I do eighth notes and pull offs

Economy Picking is what people usually label it.

Malmsteen almost looks like he picks by twitching his thumb & finger, while barely moving his wrist.

Yep...

Does anyone know what that style Michael Angelo Batio uses is called?

Re: How does Yngwie play so fast? Tip me!

One more tip, keep a light touch and use heavy picks. IMO Angelo is easier than Yngwie, don't be intimidated.

Good Luck
