Re: How easy or difficult to add effects loop.

Hi Everyone,
Looking at purchasing an old Peavey classic 20. Would like effects loop after preamp (I think). I modulation and delay effects. How difficult to do this. Is it worth it? Would most chorus, delay, and reverb effects sound just as good before the preamp?
Thanks,
Joe
If you run distorted, absolutely NOT! Refering mainly to reverb here. Cool lttie amp too!
What you can do is to find where the preamp feeds the power amp section, put a phone jack there (just parallel off that line) that becomes your send) and then put a break jack (a phone jack that will break the connection from the preamp to the power amp section when a plug is inserted) as your return jack, that jack then feeds the power amp section.
What you'll have is a preamp output and power amp input ... not quite the same, as the pre amp out will send higher signal levels as the master volume is turned up, okay with rack effects with input and output level controls, but not real good with pedals, it will work out okay with them, but you have to keep the master volume low enough not to overdrive the pedals' circuitry.
For and actual effects loop Stew-mac used to sell an all tube effects loop, but it has to be installed by a tech. If you good (reasonable) with tracing thru schematics then the pre amp out power amp in isn't that difficult to do (you still will probably have to cut some traces, reroute some wires, etc.), if not a tech should be able to do it for a not to steep fee.
