How go YOU get drum beats in your songs

I've been slowly realizing that if I want to start making songs that go in a direction that I want, I'm going to need to start making my own, or at least work with someone who can.

Preprogrammed beats and patches have helpped me thus far but I feel they are limiting my music more and more.

I do have a pad to control drums for my drum module...problem is that I just have no vibe for drums so I usually just toy with it now and then. I always end up putting the included patches in my recordings...

Any tips on where to start. I have absolutely no game on drums.

EZDrummer

with that a few expansions thats basically every drum sound and beat you could need. there are literally thousands of them and since you then just chain them all together with fills and variations theres millions of possibilities

Theres even a ton of free midi files you can get off the net. I downloaded some zip file with 9000 midi drum patterns. That could keep you busy for years

Or dont forget audio loops. Theres hundreds of titles in the ACID loops library with hundreds of beats in every style.

Thats what I've been using. I love it since it sounds great. It's the "Lite" version but I can still place midi beats into songs and just apply the EZD VST and its great.

But I guess what Im getting at is, the beats are good, but sometimes I feel like I need to slightly modify my riffs so fit the beat better which often gives the song a different feel and slowly takes the song a different direction.

Maybe part of it is there are only a select few beats to choose from in the "LITE" version I have and the other beats I use are free ones I find around on google. But the full version of EZD looks to take at least a fair chunck of change...not ridiculously too much though. I'll probably inevitably get it along with a couple of their promoted expansions.

I used PCDrummer for my recordings. To me it's only demo quality, but it lets me make the beat exactly how I want it. It works like a sequencer. It's kind of a pain to use but it's good for some things. I also use it to play bass guitar parts since I don't own a bass yet.

Check out my music to hear what I've done with it (see my sig).

I've mostly used presets either from an Alesis SR16 (internal samples or MIDI'd to the PC to trigger better samples) or BFD 2 (which has way better samples).

I've done some hand-coded MIDI drums in GuitarPro, but it's definitely a pain not being a drummer and having no "game" for it, as you said, so I stick with presets mostly.

I've modded a few of the presets to put certain beats where I need them to be, though. It's easier to tweak existing presets than write a new one from the ground up IMO.

BFD 2's editing interface allows you to tweak each piece of a pattern down to hairs (haven't gone that far) so you can get everything right where you want it.

Some tracks of mine with BFD2:

Superior Drummer 2.0

You can hear it in my 'SD '59 hair metal' thread.

Re: How go YOU get drum beats in your songs

here is the free drums I used to use http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/hotstepper.shtml

It's OK to use samples that are explicitly copyright free. So you are allowed to use beats from Making Waves, Total Ejay, or similar packages. If you're looking for loops or beats you can use, check out the category 'beats and instrumentals' on www.soundclick.com , where you can find beats for free or for sale. Dont steal!!

Never upload material from bands and artists just because you like the song. You can be held liable for copyright infringement.

Re: How go YOU get drum beats in your songs

Superior Drummer 2.0 + the NY and Metal Foundry expansions + Slate Samples for drum replacement if necessary. Most of what I do, including production for other bands, includes the use of these. They just sound really **** good and real if you know what you're doing.

Re: How go YOU get drum beats in your songs

ezd, but even that's a pain. anymore I just put it off until I get in the mindset for 8 million mouse clicks. kinda stinks to spend so much time on the drums only to spend like an hour laying down the gits, which is the fun part.

Re: How go YOU get drum beats in your songs

I do all my drum programming in less than 20 minutes in ezd

I do one loop for the entire song. Then I substitute in my tweaked drumloops that fit the song. then I put in the drum fills. and Wallah! an un-eqed but acceptable customized drumtrack on the cheap. I bought ezd for $10 and got the dfh for $70 cause Im 2 legit 2 quit and needz that cookie monster double bass.

I have EZ drummer but need to find a easier way than clicking on each measure.

Ill start a new thread.
