Re: How long do YOU? practise?

In my youth 5-8 hours a day.
Now I just play when I am at work, sometimes I take a guitar home and break some of the barriers I get from time to time.
But I still practise some stuff even after more than 20 years of playing, because it is fun to learn new things.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

Unfortunately, I'd have to say I never practice per se. I do however play guitar at least two hours per day. I never sit around trying to run scales or anything. Hell, I don't even know any scales that I know of. I just basically sit around and try to play what I hear in my head.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

When I was studying, I would practice a minimum of 6 hrs/day.
Now that I teach, on lesson nights, I'm essentially practicing with my students, re-acquainting myself with the basics over and over again.
I try to do an hour of personal get-ahead-to-reach-new-plateau practice per day. Sometimes that comes in the form of composing material I can't play and then teaching it to myself. This is happening more and more frequently, as I try to keep writing fresh-sounding material.
The week of a show I play the set all the way thru twice per night, including solos.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

When I was a kid, I'd go to school, look at rock magazines inside my books, draw Marshall stacks on my folders, and dream about being a guitar god. Then, I'd come home from school and play guitar from 3 till the time I went to bed.

When you're playing in bands, it's hard to get time to sit down and work on your own personal playing, but you have to if you want to get better.

Now, I try to sit down and work on styles, new song ideas, or learn different scale approaches from books or videos, but my short attention span doesn't allow it. After a few minutes of trying to buckle down, I just start falling into what I already know. I just burn up the neck for about an hour and consider it a good practice session. I need to pull outta that, and start taking it more seriously. I've given guitar lessons since I was 17, so I'm thinking it's about time that I pay some real money and take lessons from a serious player. In LA, a person can actually get lessons from a nationally known guitar star, but it'll cost ya. My goal this year, as far as practice goes, should be to try and take pickin lessons from someone like Will Ray, acoustic fingerstyle lessons, and maybe high level technical lessons from a guy like Scott Henderson. This thread has made me realize I should do that ASAP.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

Due to work, if I can play for an hour a day (Mon-Fri) I did good. Weekends vary, due to household things (being divorced, if I don't do it, it does'nt get done), but usually 4 to 5 hours each weekend night.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

alot :D

i try to practice about 4-5 hours a day. usually it's about 3 hours. i wnat to try to practice 7 hours a day and keep going at it.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

From about 15 minutes to about 8 hours.

I always try and put in a minimum of 15 minutes, no matter how much I don't want to play that day. Sometimes those 15 min workouts turn into a good couple hour practice session.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

I practice.... I don't know how much between 0 - 400 minutes a day. It depends. Sometimes I'll be so sullen I don't play at all, other times I'll play for an hour and a half, go to band practice for 4 hours and then play a show. To me, everytime I put my fingers on the strings, it's practicing

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

Ok ive began a practise regime that i started yesterday so hopefully i can stick it out for at least a good 6 months.. even after the total 8 hours practise over the 2 days i feel so much more "fluent"on guitar and i can play so much more fast lick i couldn't 3 days ago, a big reason for this i think is yesterday is the first time i tried practising with a metronome(the one on guitar pro) and it makes practise so much easier, less boring, you actually feel like your accomplishing something and my accuracy has gotten better 10-fold..

so remember kids....

do it safe..

use a metronome...

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

Not freaking enough! But seriously, I play for about an hour each day on average. Much longer when I get together with my buddies and jam, if you can call it that. :unitedsta

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

I player anywhere from 2-5 hours a day dude, i play so much my friends even say i got way to much time on my hands... their right but still playing guitar is worth it to me, cuz in the time ive been playing, ive got my accomplishments :) so i dont really care what they think :burnout:

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

yer i get that thing with my mates too, they think i play too much and spend too much money on guitar stuff. But when they play computer games for hours and hours i dont see how they can judge, at least my playing is creative and is helping me get somewhere. One of my mates said i was crazy for paying £800 for a guitar, then i pointed out he spent £2000 on a pc a few years ago that hardly got any use and is now worthless, and after initial depreciation my guitars value can only go up.

BTW i play for a cupla hours a day, and then as much as possible on weekends, but as for actually 'practicing' i dont really get much done at all.

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

Right! i don't know how you guitarsist in california or hot places like that do it!
the last few days its been unusually HOT in Ireland and its making it almost impossible to concentrate that its extremly frustrating practising, also bit of a coincidence considering i only started my actual 4or so hour practise "regime" a few days ago(ive never really practised properly before, well at least i never commited 4 hours no matter what a day) be it its only like 20 degress C but for us thats very hot cos were used to that very very cold weather...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

Oh and another question..

How many of you guys make up a timetable for practising, i did one just a few days ago and it makes it so much easier and it seems as if your actaully progressing, also it helps focus on everything not just what you feel like doing that day..

Re: How long do YOU? practise?

2-5 hours as well, and an important things is confidence, as well as relaxation as Rid pointed out.
