Re: How long do YOU? practise?
When I was a kid, I'd go to school, look at rock magazines inside my books, draw Marshall stacks on my folders, and dream about being a guitar god. Then, I'd come home from school and play guitar from 3 till the time I went to bed.
When you're playing in bands, it's hard to get time to sit down and work on your own personal playing, but you have to if you want to get better.
Now, I try to sit down and work on styles, new song ideas, or learn different scale approaches from books or videos, but my short attention span doesn't allow it. After a few minutes of trying to buckle down, I just start falling into what I already know. I just burn up the neck for about an hour and consider it a good practice session. I need to pull outta that, and start taking it more seriously. I've given guitar lessons since I was 17, so I'm thinking it's about time that I pay some real money and take lessons from a serious player. In LA, a person can actually get lessons from a nationally known guitar star, but it'll cost ya. My goal this year, as far as practice goes, should be to try and take pickin lessons from someone like Will Ray, acoustic fingerstyle lessons, and maybe high level technical lessons from a guy like Scott Henderson. This thread has made me realize I should do that ASAP.
