Well, how many is it, and why?

I like 24 frets (jumbo) because you have another octave and you can even bend from there. Plus, it's just plain fun! :)

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I have a 36 fret and a 31 i made. Plus a ujr style 37 and a 28 in the making. I mostly do them for fun and to be a bit different. I wouldn't go out and spend thousands on one but they are fun.

24 is plenty for me :naughty:

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

As many as looks best on the guitar in question. Function is irrelevant for me, as I never, ever play up there anyhow.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I do like inlays, preferably not dots. But, I do sometimes wonder if I'd struggle on a fretboard without position markers at all. :dunce:

Also, I apologize for not including "Fretless" as an option in the poll. I'm a bad guitar player. :34:

Shame on you. Fretless basses are sweet.

To answer your inlay question, I love a good inlay. If it's a nice looking dot inlay using abalone, mother of pearl, diablo red, sapphire blue, etc. Then it's gorgeous. A plain white, cream or black dot is pretty boring to me though.
I own a beautiful Bocote neck on a Strat that only has the side markers with no inlay. On that neck, inlay would be a crime. The grain is too gorgeous to cover.
I also love custom inlay although I do not currently own any guitars that have it. They are great to look at.

Though i actually own more guitars with 24 than anything else given the choice i would do 22 or 21 cause i prefer sound of a neck pickup on a 22 fret guitar. Thats worth more to me than 2 frets I only touch when i play "Holy Wars" But even then.. its a small matter.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I'm used to and prefer 22, anything else is not enough or too much. I like bending up to the third octave and the 24 fret guitars I've tried just threw my playing off.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

As someone who has just started playing again after 20 years, I have to be honest and say 21. Maybe later on as I become better I may select differently, but as it stands atm my current 21 is plenty for me to work with.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

Also depends on the scale of the guitar 24 3/4 scale might be more comfortable with 22. I want an Ebony board and block inlays on all of my guitars , really colorful abalone always looks good.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

22

21 and sooner or later I'm needing one more. 24 and sooner or later I'm going to get confused and be off a whole step.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

Bonus Question!:

Do you prefer having inlays, or not?

I prefer 22 Frets, rarely play up that high but still prefer 22.

I do prefer inlays–Mother of Pearl for that matter. I use to want all of my guitars to have Sharkfin Inlays but now I prefer dots. Petros Guitar Shop makes some awesome wooden inlays among other cool things. I think those would be interesting to work with...

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

Theoretically, 22 should be perfect since it allows for both traditional neck pickup placement as well as a D -> E bend on the high E. That being said, I have a few 21 fretted guitars and I don't seen to miss the 22nd fret much.
