How many guitar players have a bass?

I have always been just a guitar player and I dont have any intention of becoming a bass player. However I have been wanting to pickup a bass. Mostly just to noodle around with but also to have at our practice space so if a random jam session comes on then there is a bass in the room.

Anyone else not a bass player but have a bass?

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I play both. But I can’t say I’m not a bass player as I’ve done that a lot in bands. In my current band I’m the guitarist. On recordings I do both. Lol.

I know several guitarists that own a bass they use for recording.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I've got 4 of them, I've been a bass player in bands, but I've always been more of a guitar player.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I started out on bass, and here I am almost 50 years later with all kinds of stringed instruments... Rooms full of them.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I’ve got one now but have owned others in the past. I played bass in a band for a while many years ago.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have a couple. Not that I'm any better at playing them than I am at guitar.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Got a Peavey bolt on...aka fender clone. I do OK on it but bass is such a different mind set then it is a different instrument to play. I've done songs where I did guitar on the first take and the bass line on the 50th. With guitar you can take many more liberties with the time and we usually do so without really thinking about it so much. Bass usually doesn't get afforded that luxury.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have one bass, and was considering a backup. I enjoy playing it, but truly need something to motivate beyond a guitar player who owns a bass. I almost auditioned for a band with some wine bar, coffee house, small intimate venue, etc. gigs who was looking for a bass player, but after catching one of their gigs they needed a more experienced bass player than me.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I got 3... one's a fretless lefty though, I picked it up for $90 out of curiosity but never actually used. Really ought to restring her and put on some righty markers or lines...someday

Other 2 I like to mess with. A lot.

I have 3:

Dean Metalman Z
Dean Edge 5 String
Jackson Concert

My "Bass Rig" is an Ampeg SCRI DI box, and a boss bass EQ and a Boss Limiter. I am NOT a bass player, but I have played bass on stage.

Yeah, should've noted my bass is an Epiphone Jack Casady. I was considering one of the Fender Mustang PJ types with the shorter scale as a backup. As for bass rig, it's currently a Peavey Vypyr VIP 3. Although I was also considering the Trace Elliot ELF Micro Bass Head and the ELF 1x10 cab if I got the small venue gig.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have a Fender Jazz, and I play bass on all of my recordings.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I've always played bass, guitar and keyboards... Each one reinforces the other and it greatly increases gig opportunities...

If you are going to do it well, you have to develop a strong understanding of where you sit in the mix... As a bassist, you define key and roots and you need to be extremely aware of the kick drum...it's all about the rhytem section.

And unless you're doing the strumed bass thing, it's cruicial to develop right hand finger skills... Although some famous bassists have used picks, you have much more control with fingers.

Although I play more electric guitar, my 6 string bass sits right next to my tv watching chair and my wife has learned to tune it out.

If I'm running clean scales on the bass, I know the next guitar gig will be easy.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Funny. I consider myself primarily a bass player, at least when it comes to being able to play and perform at a professional level...yet I play tons of guitar, and I have many times more guitars and guitar amps than basses and bass amps. The only time I really pick up a bass is on stage at a gig.

There's probably a lesson in this. Something about how much gear a bass player needs compared to how much gear a guitar player needs. However I'll stop as I've already gone too far.

I had used the same 100W combo amp since 1996...until last year year, when I bought two amps (one 40W for practice and very small rooms, and the other for much louder venues – an 800 watter with multiple cabs).

Same with basses. I primarily played two basses for decades. But in the past year, I've bought three new ones, and made significant strides in building three more.

With guitar crap, I have way more than I can justify. Don't ask me why. It just sort of happens that way.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I started on guitar when I was 14-15. In college I picked up the bass, I was maybe 19 at the time. Played in a band and learned a lot about rhythm that way. It actually helped me as a guitar player. Meeting Greg Chaisson after a Badlands concert is something I'll never forget. I asked him for some tips since I was new with bass and he gladly shared. From then on I worked at playing the bass as a bass player, not as a guitar player.

I had a bass for a long time (80's Peavey Patriot) and then sold it when it was collecting dust more than anything. I got the itch to play bass again and last year picked up a Sterling SUB Ray4, and not long after swapped the pickup for a Duncan SMB-4. My bass rig is an Ampeg PortaFlex PF500 with a GK CX-410 cabinet. No effects or anything extra, I plug straight in and go.

I auditioned for a few bands, landed in one on bass, then our guitar player had a heart attack on stage (he's fine now, thank God) and while he was recouping, we had a gig scheduled so on to guitar I jumped whilst the bass player I replaced (tinnitus forced him to stop) came back so we could do the gig. And here we are, I'm now on guitar but can jump back and forth no problem. It took some getting used to because I have to change my mindset between guitar and bass and what I'm doing. As long as our bass player has his earplugs, he's fine.

I'd love to get a nice P-Bass or build one, or even build a P-J Bass like the AeroDyne, or a PJ Bass w/ a '54 body and a Tele bass neck.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Been playing 25 years and I finally bought a bass last year. I still don't touch it unless I'm recording. Bass playing has never held the slightest appeal to me. I had'nt even touched one before, though I do appreciate listening to others play Bass ...guys like Geezer, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee & so many others :bigthumb:

It's just not my thing.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have one I rarely play--a MIJ Fender Precision "Lyte". Beautiful instrument; every bass player I've ever showed it to is like, "Well, it's not as good as my REAL Fender Jazz/Precision, but can I use on the gig? My back is sore!" LOL!

NO!

How much does the "Lyte" weigh?

I was recently inspired by the triple-pup Ibby LP weight loss thread to weigh my gear out of sheer curiosity... turns out one of my lightest guitars is a bass!

'87 Ibanez RD-707 (think "RG bass") ---- 3.55kg / 7.8 lbs

Actually....the lightest. 0.1 lbs lighter than my strat
