How many 'Limited Editions' are there really?

So I was looking at a Fender Thinline Jaguar. Ok, neat take on a punk guitar. All over the place I read that it's a special 50th anniversary edition with only 250 were released in the US. But if I search for that guitar on the Internet, there's well over 250 stores that have them in stock in two colors. And I just called Musitions Fiend and they had 100 in stock in just one of the colors!

So my question is: Do you guys have a way of getting real insight into the real numbers of 'limited edition' guitars? How do you sort through the B.S. advertising and figure out how many there actually are? Are these numbers always just meaningless lies? Or is there 'gotcha' small print somewhere I'm not seeing, like "only 250 released in the U.S. to each store" ?

One could say that the proliferation of 'limited editions' seem to be unlimited. But that's a good thing. Gives consumers much more to choose from when they make small runs of guitars. To justify putting a model into long-term production means most won't make the cut and you don't get much of a selection. What's more boring than looking in a guitar catalog and seeing that everything is the exact same models they had 10 years ago? The guitar market is fluid and constantly changing. Maybe that's partly because musicians have limited attention spans.

Beat me to the punch The only reason to worry about the size of a run is how hard it might be to find one down the road. In 99.9% of cases, the limited nature isn't going to affect used prices much.

Agree completely on the selection issue. Limited editions might just be variations on a theme but variety is the spice of life.

Absolutely. Gibson and Epiphone have put out some great limited editions and reissues. Guitars that may not have sold hundreds of thousands of units in regular production, but are highly coveted by a certain fan base. Viva la difference!

Well over 250 stores that have them in stock in two colors? I highly doubt that. Sounds like misinterpretation of the evidence to me.
