what do you think the minimum amount of wattage needed would be for one vocalist in a semi-loud trio?

Re: how many watts for vocals?

well obviously it depends on how loud you are playing....and the venue

In my covers band, the pa is about 1400 watts, but we also run the kick drum, bass and guitar through it. We play in pubs usually, but are sometimes called upon to play semi-outdoors......which is why we need so much power (even 1400 is taking a gamble....always better to have too much...)

any help here guys? 200 watts SS? 400?

In my experience 400-500 should be enough for most medium-sized gigs. The Jail House Rockers are a little louder than most and we used a setup that put out 300W per side and it was JUST enough.

Re: how many watts for vocals?

im not talking about gigging, im talking for rehearsal. So, it doesnt need to be perfect, but enough to where the vocals can just be heard. my band plays a semi-loud volumes, but were not a rock n roll band or anything, lots of clean guitar sounds, etc.

Re: how many watts for vocals?

I've used a 50w solid state Marshall, and I could still hear myself over a loud drummer, a 500w bass amp (not cranked of course) and a Fender Vibrolux (again, not cranked)

Re: how many watts for vocals?

I'd get an 100-ish watt keyboard amp in that case, nad raise it off the ground for more projection. If you are rehearsing in a small room that should be fine

Re: how many watts for vocals?

what about a Crate powerblock, would that work ok for this? We need to set up an alternative rehearsal place when we cant play at our current one, and we need a little setup for vocals. We have access to a Crate Powerblock, which i think can run 150 watts? I'd like to avoid having to buy a new power amp. We have plenty of speaker cabs and monitors.

Re: how many watts for vocals?

im not sure about what a full range speaker is, but we have a few old Peavy PA speaker cabs and monitors, some with Peavy speakers and some with old JBL 12" guitar speakers. Whatever they are, they sound good

Re: how many watts for vocals?

From my experiences (apart from that Club show we played recently, Our Pa is nearly running louder at rehersals that it is at Gigs. We used to use a 300w a side power amp, though it was 300w per side at 4ohm and I was only runng 2 speakers at 8Ohm each so really the amp was only runnign at abuot 190watts per side, or about 400watts in total as i was bridging it. It was plently for any of the gigs we were playing if it was just vocals we were using, but we had everything going into it so it was coming up a bit short (mind you only just a bit short for gigs, we defintily got by fine though).

Now I bought a Dynacord Powermate 1000. 500watts per side, thats what i used for the Med sized club we played and it was fine!

Thought at gigs We still only have 2 Tops so we're at 250watts per side,, but thats plenty for micing eveything at the pub and function room gigs without wanting to be overly loud so all is good!!
+ the dynacords sound quality is just marvellous!!!!

Re: how many watts for vocals?

PA is all about headroom and CLEAN power. I laugh now because I used to gig with a loud band using a 210-watt Peavey XR-600 and a pair of SP-2s. It was an AMAZING difference the first time I biamped that system with 800 watts. I never wanted to go back to using the 210-watt system again.

You can find out from Peavey the rated PROGRAM POWER required for your speakers, and that's what I would put into them. If they can be biamped, that can give you a little more headroom and clarity. The Peavey techs over at the Peavey.com Forum can really help. Marty and Aubrey are good people, and they REALLY know how to get the best from your gear.

Re: how many watts for vocals?

definately not within the 100 watt range.
It has to be >150 watts even if its a 4 piece band
The instruments especially the drums will cover the vocals

Re: how many watts for vocals?

Vox are very dynamic. The more wattage, the better. And definitely get a compressor, as well!

Yes, that's why you want big wattage.

At minumum, I recommend 200w of main power and 150w of monitor power for a basic system. A 400w stereo power amp will do.

Quality monitors are very important!

For small gigs, that wattage should be ok, given that you have decent speakers. For larger venues, I'd recommend renting equipment. It's very expensive and bulky.

Re: how many watts for vocals?

remember guys, i said this is not for gigging, its only for rehearsing. This will not need to be used anywhere but in the rehearsal space

Then I recommend getting a monitor system. Get a high quality monitor and 200w to power it.

I like to use monitors for rehearsal because that's the way you will hear your vocals on stage anyway.

You may be able to use this on stage in the future also. I bring my own monitor to gigs. Sometimes the sound guy will let me use it.
