My band has played quite a few free shows. We made $200 for playing a 4th of July gig last year, and made $375 by winning a local Battle of the Bands. Usually, we take in about $40-50 per paying gig.
Hey, when did you win battle of the bands cuz I know I guy that goes to Riverside high school (in your band?) supposedly his band won that, did you gig @ summerfest? BTW what kind of music do you play, cover, original, what style? Need another guitarist or wanna hear me? I'm dying to play in a band and would love to just play with other people just for leisure n stuff too.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

I completely feel you there kmc!! I had one particular gig where I played and sang solo. The only thing was, it was kinda open-mic night-ish. There was a Karaoke chic onvolved, and I rotated sets between poorly performed karaoke acts. The chic got paid $400 for the night, and I only got $100. She didnt even dj, just set the discs up for the next wannabe. Well, if you counted the beer I consumed, I got overpaid. As KMC said, I gave myself a huge raise. I got so liquered up once that I even stooped to being a human karaoke for tips and played songs while these cretons sang.
In other venues, I have made around $125-200 per night per member playing 4 hours with hourly 10-minute breaks!!

Iche mochte eine zen minuten pause, bitte!!

Of course, you have to perform covers to electrify the crowd until you have street credit. Then you can slide in originals until they become accepted.

Happy, You're gonna give that hockey crap up and play on the pro-tour!

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

Last night I got 5 bux playing in a coffee shop. We played for about an hr and a half. This 5 bux was from tips. 15 bux divided among the three of us. It was the best gig I've ever done tho. We did a couple blues jams, Voodoo Child, Wind Cries Mary, Johnny B Goode, an original, and we made up a song (jam) on the spot when we had 10 minutes left to play. I think we're going to start playing there every Tuesday night for awhile.

The most I've ever gotten was 6 bux, which I actually never even got. I think the bass player spent it on pot. This is one reason I dont like drugs.

My last cover band was a trio, when we supplied the sound gear (in the earlier years) we ave about $125 per man. As time progressed we hired a sound company to do sound for us that cost us $225.00 of our $375 per night, leaving 150 to split 3 ways. Still not bad money but after awhile the sound crew wanted more and when we passed the expense on to the club owners they ballked. Now I play orignals gig about 1 hour per night and sell cds. We usually open up for area bands and use their sound gear. We are done by 11:00pm and are home within a couple of hours, leaving the other band to deal with the club owners not wanting to pay, the cops waiting to nail anyone for dwi etc. Moral of the story is as a musician you dont get paid what you are worth.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

in cover band EUR 80-100 per hour (per person)
in big band: EUR 0-100 per gig

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

$1000 divided by how many members, so....

theres 5 members, $200 bucks each. :)

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

in and around Boston your looking at $500 for 3 sets ( 1 hr) or 2 longer sets. Cover bands make this money , Dont' know about original bands. Opening band might get $100. I've heard of cover bands getting $1300.

One friend was in a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band and they'd get $1,500 to play a night in New York (Albany area) Itr was really worth the 6 hour round trip for 4 guys after a couple of times.
My friends Irish band gets $250 or so split 3 ways. Sometimes he plays private parties solo and gets $200 by himself. The Irish band knows about 3 1/2 hours worth of music and then they throw in some Bruce Springsteen or older rock and roll )Del Shannon, Buddy Holly etc)

If the economu picks up so that people go out and spend more at bars, bands will eb able to get gigs a little easier and the good band should be able to get more. People don't have the disposible income like they did 3 years ago. I was at VH last week and there were tons of scalpers trying to unload tickets. I hear that Madonna was the same way. Prince is playing in Boston soon , And I'm seeign signs of a ticket dump starting with the scalpers. The same thing with local cover bands, people just don't have the dough right now.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

Hmm, it's been awhile, but I generally got about $150/night as a sideman, $100-$300/night as a bandmember, and $75/hr as a studio rat. Got 10% of all album sales as a producer once - added up to couple of thousand when all was said and done.

Learn to read (especially sight read). A guy withs chop and sightreading ability can earn a decent amount. Put me through school... Associate yourself with players that are better than you are. That'll open up all kinds of possibilities. It's a tough way to earn a living, but with a little luck and a lot of work, it can be done.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

I don't book any jobs anymore that pay less than $400 / night. We're a three piece band so that splits quite well. I've gotten to the point where I don't even like to get the instrument out of the case for less than $100 for myself. We work about 2 weekends a month.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

Typical pub gigs here are two 45-minute sets plus encores. We average about £170 per gig, and that gets divided between five of us.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

Get paid for playing? That would be great! I gotta pay two bucks to do a 25 minute set. I play at the Sonoma County Blues Society Wed. night jams. It's a lot of fun - well worth the two bucks.

Mostly done garage band stuff. In my hey-day I was in a band called Section Eight. Only time we got recompensed was food and drink. One time, after carrying in all the gear and setting up, we went to the bar for a drink. When they tried to charge us for the drinks, we said "we're the band". They said no, the band is over there drinking. Turns out some guys (friends of ours) said they were the band and we were the roadies settin' up.

The bandleader/keyboard player got really pissed. He kicked them out, and we got our drinks - and dinner. I laughed my butt off though, I thought it was funny.

Re: how much do u earn when u gig?

we've played for free, we've gotten $80 to split and we're about to play a venue that give you the tickets to sell, you pay the sound guy $40 and we keep half the ticket sales.. should be interesting. going to be hard to sell tickets besides at the door cause the venue is pretty out of the way, but just playing is enough, theres nothing like it, especially with a good sound guy, he can make you sound HUGE with the right levels
