How much output impedance mismatch do tube (Selmer) amps tolerate?

I need some help as I may have to use some other guy's speaker cabs with an old Selmer tube amp (el84s non-adjustable bias) that should use an 8ohm load from the speaker (it's a non switchable tranny - old, see) .
I can't change the output tranny so is it OK to run a mismatch, but which way is "safer"?
Would it be better if the cab is 16 ohms (so twice as high as normal) or would it be safer if the cab is 4 ohms (ie half the normal load).
I don't care about volume differences as I'm only doing rythm parts, but I don't want a meltdown as part of the stage show, even if it is traditional!
Any advice would be well appreciated.

Ta for the link Darrin, this means I'm in the sh1t, but problems are there to be solved, time for the soldering iron folks.
