How much to paint a P-Bass?

I'm just pricing my options right now and not necessarily acting on this.

But I can get a solid alder P-bass body and a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard from Warmoth for roughly $300.

Warmoth has a $200 surcharge for a burst finish.

What I'm wanting to do is recreate the Fender '62 P-Bass (essentially the "James Jamerson" model, if there ever was one).

Any painters on here able to give me a range on what to expect for a 3-tone burst with nitro finish? Would an automotive body painting place be able to help me or do they typically do JUST poly finishes these days?

your best bet, money wise is to be patient and get one from their Showcase

other than that, you might take a look at Roxy Guitar Finish - they do some of the best bursts I've seen for somewhere around $250 ... not everyone does good bursts, IMO ;)

Shoot, I'll paint the thing for you for $30 bucks. It won't look very nice, but.....

Oh, Curly, good idea!!!

So long as I keep the price under $1350 (what Fender wants for the '62 RI) it's really more effective to do it this way.

Lacquer automotive paint is a thing of the past, unfortunitely.
I could use some Nitrocelluose Lacquer for my car. I'd settle for Lacquer Enamel but even that isn't available anymore.
