How much would a luthier charge to fix this?

Hey guys, I've finally tracked down a used Hamer Studio, and I'm pretty interested in buying it. The only problem is that it has a fairly large scratch on the left hand side. I'm less concerned about cosmetic issues than I am playability issues, but approximately how much would a luthier charge to fix something like this? Can anyone give me a rough estimate?

Thanks guys.

my guess is you're looking at a good few hundred bucks american. But then again it doesn't look that bad..

Re: How much would a luthier charge to fix this?

if i were you i wouldnt worry about it..... if you plan on keeping this guitar over the long haul it is bound to get scratches.... and if you were to pay to get it fixed and sell the guitar you may not make your money back

Yeah, like I said, I'm not the type of person to treat a guitar like a museum piece. I buy a guitar to play, not to look at. Still, I wouldn't mind getting it fixed if it's not too expensive, especially if I can talk the seller into a lower price due to the wear. But if it's going to cost a couple hundred dollars to fix, I don't think I'll bother with it.

Nothin a bit o' green paint wont fix :)
But seriously i wldnt worry, because your thinking about buying it the mark seems worse than it is, it took me a while to even notice it!

Ryan,

Another suggestion - is to see if you could get $50-$100 knocked off the price and then ask Hamer directly what sort of stain/colour they would use to patch up that scratch. Then buy the stain or get one from one of those stores and do it yourself. Of course this all depends on what sort of price the seller is asking for that guitar and he may not budge from the price, but no harm asking. Of course he should have disclosed it in his advert.

man, you can do that yourself w/ some stain from stew mac and the little arisol sprayers. you just mix the right amount of stain, stain the wood, then spray. wet sand, spray, wet sand, spray, then buff.

Trying to match that green with Dye would be a bitch, Not Impossiable But
a real pain even for a pro. Then is it lacquer or poly? It's easier to spot
repair Lacquer. I would recomend a complete refinish. I Imagine that's
what a Luthier would say? Or another Idea would be to burst it with a
darker shade of green around the edge.

Re: How much would a luthier charge to fix this?

i like the way it is. it has character. my strat is scratched and some of the gloss is worn out, but it looks damn cool.

Re: How much would a luthier charge to fix this?

Why would you want to repaint it? It's beginning to show signs of character. It's not damage, it's where the previous owners forearm has 'loved' it away.

Ask Lew if he would respray his vintage Tele - then you do the same.
That's a nice guitar and it's ageing nicely.

It will one day be worth far more 'as is' than patched up.

Nice instrument. I'm not normally a fan of green, but that shade looks quite nice. I'd be thinking that you're looking at a couple of hundred to fix the scratch. But keep in mind that anything you do to the instrument changes the sound, finish included.
