How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

I'm thinking about dropping one in the bridge with a 59 in the neck in this new Epiphone LP studio I won yesterday in a competition. I'm looking for that nice growl and just down right nasty tone, is the George Lynch P/ the one i'm looking for if I want that old dokken metal sound? Any Suggestions?

I have one in my ESP Strat at the moment; with no tone control, I finally found something brighter than Texas Specials :D I am going to re-wire it in a new pickguard with SD in the bridge and a Classic Stack in the neck; seperate volumes and a common 250K tone should calm the top end on the SD to accentuate the nastiness but still allow the DS to twang and sing when needed.

In a LP Studio, I think it would be a good match with a 59 in the neck - it basically is a hotter 59 with a little more top-end...

It is actually a bright, articulate, low output pickup. It is poorly named.

That "old" Dokken metal sound is actually a Duncan Distortion. Try that.

Effect tweekage skills. Lynch uses more than you would think, but uses them extremely well/subtle.

And, the rest is guitar god chops. Good luck with that.

Word. I was super pissed when I first bought one 11 or 12 years ago. I ended up digging it, but with that name, I was expecting something that screamed and sounded demonic.

It doesn't help that every moron music store guy will tell you it's a super hot pickup.

Re: How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

yea, the screamin demon should be renamed the wining baby. Just kidding, it's not terrible, you just REALLY have to know how to use it. It's EQ is a bit spikey for my tastes. For an 80's metal sound, go with a Full Shred or a Distortion, they're both winners in my book. The distortion can cover more ground though. It can do anything from Satriani to Slayer in the right application. The FS is a great pickup, it just lacks, that huge bass presence. But hey, if your playing Dokken, you might not need a whole lot of bass presence. Hope this helps

Re: How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

The Demon is a VERY clean pickup. It has a fat bottom, and very present highs (I won't say bright) and has a medium output compared to a 59 and Distortion. The Duncan Distortion will give you a great Dokken sound without as much work on your part, but I love the Demon more.

Re: How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

I hated it in my Les Paul custom....very disappointing. I thought it was defective, it sounded like a single coil pickup.......It sounded decent in a strat when I put it there. I sold it off on Ebay and don't miss it. I replaced it with a Duncan Distortion and never looked back!

Re: How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

The real qestion is: How nasty can your amp get?

The Demon can do pretty much anything you ask, as long as your amp is up to it.

Country? No sweat.

Skynard? Of course.

ZZ Top? You got it.

STP? Yep.

As long as your amp has the gain and voicing for the music you're playing, the Demon will let you work with that.

Re: How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

I've found that the Demon sounds best to me in Basswood guitars.

Re: How nasty is the George Lynch Screamin' Demon?

It is thick, but very clear and articulate in the neck position of a les paul, paired with an Alt 8 bridge. :-)

Me too. These guitars tend to sound muddy and middy, the Demon just bring back the attack, brightness and bass you need.
Worked wonderful for me.

In alder it's good also, but definitely has a single coil-ish sound, birght and tight, which is what i like.

In Mahogany, for some reason, the JB worked better.

I bet that would work great from my experience with the Demon and basswood. I dont like either but, I bet they would work well together.
