How often do you change your guitar strings?

hey guys...i was wondering how often you change your guitar strings. I usually change mine every 2 weeks, but depending on how much i play could be sooner. I heard some pros change theirs like once a week, but then i hear somebody tell me you don't have change them but every 6 months. How often do you change yours?

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

i change mine the first saturday of every month.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

Whenever it feels like they're all gunked up, or exactly a week before a gig.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

Every three months.
When I first started playing guitar on my Epiphone Explorer there was a whole period of one year where I did not change strings. At the end the strings did not look very fresh.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I change mine every few months, when they break, or a few days after I let a friend play with one.

They never rust on me, but when one of my friends play you can see oxidization on them the next day.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I usually end up changing mine every 3-4 months. I don't know what it is about Gibson Vintage Reissue strings, but those things just last forever, longest lasting strings I've ever used.

When they either start sounding a bit flat or the 1st,2nd,and 3rd strings start changing color too much towards black coloring...I have so many guitars and I always clean the strings often and rotate my guitars around, that I rarely have to change my strings..I Use either GHS Fast fret or Dr StringFellow in a bottle and it keeps the strings clean and lubricated..It's a must here in Florida anyway with our humidity!

Jeez, what kind of strings do you use that get crappy so fast? Why don't you change your brand of string if you have to change them so frequently?

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I change mine every 4 hours of play but I am a string freak :13:

Of course I have to keep tons of string to do so. I order 24 sets at a time from www.webstrings.com they are pretty good for the price.

I sweat a lot so I really do need to change them often.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

yeah what's up with ppl changing your strings so frequently?? There's no need... I can see changing them before a gig, that definitely makes sense... I change mine only once every 3-4 months, or when they start "dying" and losing their tone. I can generally hear or see when its time, by red rust... although when I first got my red ibanez the reflection of the body on the fretboard area of the strings made them look rusted.. I realised AFTER I changed them that they were less than a month old :smack: :laugh2:

ok.... DUDE.... that's a completely new level of obsessive-compulsiveness... every 4 hours of play? that's like changing them every 2 or 3 days!! that's not normal, you need to see a guitar psychologist lol! :32:

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

Somewhere around every 20 playing hours.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I change my strings at least once every

BLUE MOON!

I change them when they begin wavering on pitch/become harder to tune to pitch. Never just because "it's time."

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I try to change them possibly monthly? Whenever I feel like they are getting grimey or darkening my sound. However, if a show is coming up - I usually like to swap sets a couple days before the gig.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I don't change them enough. My Dean Chafin has its old strings on there from when I bought it two years ago. They still look, feel and sound good... it's unbelievable  I really should find out that brand.

I bought 10 sets of the GHS "Fatties" from Guitar Center for $20. Decent strings that last a few months at a time. After that, they do break and they do discolor relatively quickly. I don't play all that hard so I don't break strings often. I was blessed with having no acidic sweat problems unlike my friend (it actually wears away the finish on his guitars and the strings).

When I actually do finish with those, I will seriously think about some Elixir Nanoweb strings (anything advertised as sounding new even after excessive use, wins in my book ;) ). Besides, I know they'll last and I like the feel of Elixirs.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

Changing all the guitars every 3 months and basses every 6 months is a chore, but it's a good way for me to make sure everything is adjusted well and they're playing how I want em to

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

I think part of the reason i change mine so quick....is after a couple of weeks ..i can begin to feel them wearing ....and they don't feel and sound as good ..compared to some fresh ones, but i guess it all depends how often you pick up your guitar. I do everyday. Plus my band plays gigs on about every weekend. I play relatively hard when we are playing live shows. Mainly because i am getting into our music. I break strings here and there, but that is mainly do to my sharp saddles on my bridge......which i need to replace. I use the Ernie Ball Top Heavy Bottoms. I like the heavier gauge on the bottom for when i am tuned down to C and i still like the lighter on top cause it makes it so much easier to bend strings. Thats why those sets are perfect for me. So all and all 2 to 3 weeks...is when i begin to feel the strings fade.

Re: How often do you change your guitar strings?

A few days before a gig. Other than that i will use the same strings for many months, sure they sound dull, but they don't rust with me and they are fully usable.
