How To Captivate Your Audience: Expression

Back in early 2001, I moved from my native country of The Netherlands to England. The reason I moved was because I had accepted a job there, which I was very excited about. I ended up living in a shared house with three other housemates. This turned out to have a grave effect on my job performance.

I ended up spending nearly every evening in the local pub with my housemates. This was at a time when pubs in England closed at 11pm at night. Luckily for us, we were friends with the landlord who allowed us to hang around after closing time. And hanging around meant more beer for everyone, and for me it usually meant playing some tunes on the guitar. They loved it.

I played covers and my own tunes. I played a lot of tunes back then — I didn’t spend much time practising. I composed a lot of songs, too. The songs I wrote meant a lot to me; I could pour my heart and soul into singing and performing them in front of others.

One night, we were up to our usual late-night antics when one of my housemates (who was probably my biggest fan) remarked,

“I really like the covers you play. But when you play your own songs, it’s different, it sounds even better, you really come to life”.

The alcohol in my system probably prevented me from fully comprehending what that meant, but some time later (and I mean, a couple of months) it was perfectly clear. I was able to express myself completely playing my own songs; my own songs meant a lot more to me than the covers did.

I just didn’t `feel’ the covers I played as profoundly as I did my own songs.

How To Captivate your Audience

This brings me to the subject of expression. Ultimately, music allows you to express yourself on a personal level, so that other people can connect to you.

If you want people to enjoy listening to you, you must make sure that you can fully express yourself through the songs you play. Playing a song that doesn’t really mean that much to you, is like trying to have a conversation with someone where you are reading from a script. It’s hollow; it has no substance.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you should compose your own songs and stay away from covers. No, not at all, although it is in general easier to express yourself it the song is your own. I am saying that if you want to truly captivate your audience, you should pick songs that, when you perform them, touch you right in your soul — makes you glow from inside. When you play a cover, you should make it your own; whether that means that you alter it, or maybe not at all.

If you don’t feel it, don’t play it.

Expression is the end, technique is the means

Expression is the end of technique and the beginning of music. You can’t fully express yourself if you don’t have the skills — being able to let your fingers do the playing and hear the song and melody in your head. You can’t work on your expression until you’ve got the song down cold.
Next time you pick a song to play, choose one that makes you really feel it inside when you play it. Practise it until your fingers are able to play it automatically, and then pour your heart and soul into bringing it to life!

Welcome to the forum.

Do you have a fluffy moustache ?

If you want people to go to your website, it might be vaguely useful to point them towards it via a link of some kind.

An Observation Concerning Original Songs Performed Live:

I attend as many open mic nights as my schedule and fuel budget will allow. A well played, accurately tuned guitar is important. Singing on pitch is important. A performance without obvious mistakes is important.

Given that those things are reasonably adhered to my observation is that crowds react most favorably to very upbeat songs (tempo wise) and particularly if they include clever or preferably humorous lyrics.

This is just my opinion based on personal observations. People who go out to clubs, or open mic nights, or restaurants that feature live music want to be entertained, and that is not accomplished with dark songs with sobering lyrics.

I have a song about homelessness and hopelessness that I believe is very good, and I've had a professed musician or song writer or two say they liked it. I've heard several positive comments from strangers, but as far as a positive crowd reaction ... never.

+1

A singer/songwriter guy I know performs solo, electro-acoustic guitar and vocal. Tidy guitarist, great voice. His marriage break-up ballads were tolerated during his live set. Cassettes of this material were almost impossible to shift. By comparison, cheerful, bouncy, original material about dancing, drinking and generally getting it on always went down well.

You really want to captivate your audience?

- get a f'n sense of humor
- Grow your hair long (if you can... otherwise get plugs and extensions or a wig)
- Practice hard
- Learn some moves
- Have some f'n fun for crying out loud

Nobody cares about some boo-hoo crybaby woe-is-me music. People's lives are tough enough and they
sure as hell don't want to pay $$$ to feel even crappier on their night out.

If you're enthused and having fun, they will be too.

Positivity is contagious! Screw the humbugs! PARTY!

This is a day that will go down in history.

LLL, I'm not sure the hair is a necessity (although I am growing both of mine out), but otherwise I believe you are 100% correct.

I remember seeing an interview with Vince Neil one time, and he pretty much said the exact thing. I completely agree.

This is the way it's done. 90% of modern players leap around like chimpanzees without the skills or talent to match. They are making utter fools of themselves. Be like Gary Moore. Leave every last bit of your true heartfelt emotion; your sweat, and tears out there on the floor.

The best way for many electric guitarists to impress an audience is to turn their amplifiers off. Acoustic guitar is a bit of a problem in that area, which is why smart punters at acoustic gigs always carry a pair of wire cutters.

Ah but, hair is a big-time necessity.

Let's do an experiment in the interest of science.

Here's me before hair:

And here's me after hair:

Now, which photo screams "PARTY!"?

Yes, indeed.
