The guitar smells awful. The case smells awful. I heard that a bowl of coffee grounds in the case would help. Can I put pine sol on the guitar? It's an epiphone so it doesn't have a nitro finish. Should I just wipe it down with lemon oil?
Re: How to get rid of a nasty smell off of a used guitar?
I used the coffee trick for two strats I bought from an extreme smoker (and he was a doctor too). They smelled horrible. I put fresh coffee grinds in a cup, put one in each case....closed the case and left it for 4 or 5 days. It worked great!
Re: How to get rid of a nasty smell off of a used guitar?
Getting rid of smells always has to start with a thorough surface cleaning of the object giving off the smell; any smell comes from material (perhaps not visible, but present) on the object.
All the air fresheners in the world won't get rid of a smell if the material on the object remains and continues to off-gas.
Re: How to get rid of a nasty smell off of a used guitar?
Gotta clean the surfaces to start. A fluffy microfiber cloth and a little rubbing alcohol on all of the painted surfaces and hardware will get rid of most of it.
Follow up with some guitar polish and clean/oil the fretboard. Then let it air for a day or two.
As long as you don't store it back in the stinky case, that should do it.
As for the case, the coffee grounds might work, depending on the nature of the smell. Is it a hard case? Are we talking smoke smell? Spilled beer? Mildew or a musty rotten smell?

I may try the apple an/or coffee trick! I have one that Ive cleaned the whole guitar top to bottom, scrubbed the outside of the case and used fabreeze inside. Its MUCH better, but still has an old/musty smell
Re: How to get rid of a nasty smell off of a used guitar?
heaps of baking (bicarbonate) soda liberally distributed in the case for a day or so then dump the excess and vacuum it.
Use eucalyptus oil on the guitar.
If the baking soda trick is still not enough for the case, put some white vinegar in a spray bottle and liberally spray the inside of the case, then when it has dried, repeat the baking soda trick.

Cut A potato in half and place it in the case. Works on a lot of stuff...after a day you should see a dark spot forming in the center of the potato if its doing anything.
