Does anybody know how to test if the pickups work correctly? I have a peavey 6505+ 112 and I play an bc rich assassin fx 6 whith Sd Black winter.I think that the sounds lacks some dynamics or something. Sorry for the dumb question :smack: Thanks in advance

You can tap lightly with a screwdriver on the coils to see if they are active and you can measure their output with a multimeter and see if they are in the ball park. You can just measure it from a patch cable in the output, no need to open the guitar.

Simplest:

Plug in chord to output jack, select one pickup, V max T max, and take a tester and measure the resistance (kOhms) across the tip and sleeve of the chord

Then compare to the numbers listed for the pickup

If there's significant discrepancy, something is wired wrong

Update us with the results of these tests- we wanna make sure your pickups are working correctly!

Re: How to know if your pickups work correctly?-Seymour Duncan Black Winter

I have made the measurements using 2 different cables, volume knob-at max, tone knob-at max and the multimeter set on 20kOhms:
1.NECK PICKUP 12.83-12.84 kOhms
2.BRIDGE PICKUP 15.81-15.85 KOhms
!when I made the measurements i observed some oscilations in the values for neck and bridge pickups -I havent got a single steady value, and the oscilations were like +0.100/0.300 kohms bigger than what I have written above wich were the ^most stable^ values. Thank you very much

The bridge is a maybe a bit low (16.6 k), but the neck is alright.

Taking into account that the reading is not direct and that the resistance can vary a bit I’m not sure that’s what the OP is missing.

@OP have you tried to raise / lower the pickups? What pots do you have, 500k?

I haven t tried to lower or rais the pickups. The potentiometers have 500K.

Cool.

If you’re lacking dynamics and the pickups have enough body you may want to lower them. Try to lower them a fair bit to make sure you can hear the change and if you like it you can then find the sweet spot.

Remember that you're measuring the pups resistance in parallel with the volume pot. That makes the reading lower. Also, even the smallest amount of vibration will cause the strings to move, which will cause the fluctuation you have in your reading.
