How to Learn New Strumming Patterns For Acoustic?

I've recently taken up acoustic for my church group and noticed my strumming patterns are rather limited. Short of learning individual songs and piecing together parts from them, are there any online videos that compile together a whole bunch of iconic, for lack of a better word, strum patterns? Maybe another video with a bunch of tricks and flourishes that I can throw in? Just something to get me started into acoustic strumming.

I really think listening, copying and changing is the best method. Do you read and write music? If so, you can create a ton of permutations of quartet, eighth and sixteenth note patterns over bars of 4/4. Barring that, what do you think of this?

This book is more than strumming, but also more than just a simple “how to play guitar” book.

PFD got it right. In all my years of teaching, listening, copying and changing seems to work the best, rather than learning 'down down up down' or something like that. You have to get the feel of the rhythms in your body.

Try tapping the rhythms on a desk with the strumming hand. Its merely a mechanical exercise of teaching your brain how to be rhythmic, so you have to hear it in your head, then be able to make that happen physically.

Learn a few funk tunes and focus on really locking in. They tend to be ALL strumming pattern, usually just hanging on to one or two chords. Once you get a feel for those 16th note subdivisions, acoustic strumming will be a cakewalk. You'll hear them faster and be able to pick them up easier.

^^ Makes sense. Got any recommendations for tunes?

Try to play along with James Brown (including the JBS), Curtis Mayfield and George Clinton's groups etc etc. You will learn more about strumming playing along with them than years of studying Mel Bay books.

Practice changing up rhythms and strumming on top of those songs once you can mimic the patterns verbatim

Most people struggle with timings with challenging upstroke patterns and counter intuitive muting

-other types of music will seem simple and easy after a few months of practicing to these.

Off the top of my head?

Chic - Good Times
Daft Punk - Get Lucky / Lose Yourself To Dance
Wild Cherry - Play that Funky Music
Sex Machine - James Brown

Step 1: Stop playing for your church. If all you need are cowboy chords and boring strumming to get by, you're not going to improve.
Step 2: Listen to literally any song with a guitar in it.
Step 3: Also pay attention to the drums and emulate some of those rhythmic patterns into your strumming.
Step 4: Success.

I've done the math on this, and it checks out.

This would be my suggestion as well.

I agree with all of this except quitting your church band. If you aren't in any other bands and you don't find their material challenging enough, make your own material. But dropping away from people that can help you 1 on 1 and talk to you about musical concepts isn't gonna help you.
