How to measure pickups?

How do you use a DVOM to find out what pickup you have. I have several pickups that are not installed in any guitars. I know that they are Duncans and Dimarzio's, but I do not know what they are exactly. I'm sure there is a way to use a DVOM and find out, but I'm not sure how to do it. Do you use an ohms setting on the meter and check certain colored wires to tell? I know a lot of manufactures use D.C. Resistance and give a spec per pickup, but how do I measure the pup to get the 'spec'. Thanks in advance!

Re: How to measure pickups?

Use the 20kohms setting. Then start testing wires. It doesn't matter what lead you use ( on the DVOM) for positive or negative, you will get the same reading either way. You will have to get wiring specs off of the respective sites. Then take readings either on each coil seperately or wired for humbucker. There are also visual clues that will tell you what the pups are as well. Again, check out the respective websites for those.
