How to remove Marshall rivets?

Re: How to remove Marshall rivets?

Drilling them out the only way?

You mean from the corner caps? They arent traditional rivets. They need to be pried up with like a chisel, at which point I would also replace the corners cause there is a good chance you will bugger up the caps prying them off.

Here check em out

You can see they arent a traditional rivet.

I have a nightmare memory of these things. What I thought was going to be a simple replace the cracked corner cap turned into a 4 hour ordeal. When i drilled it it left the 2 tangs in the wood so i had to drill it some more to remove them which then meant filling it with epoxy. Even when pried out they tend to enlarge the hole, just dont be suprised if you have to do a little bit of epoxy or wood filler to get the new ones to fit nice and tight.

I take it they're ribbed (whether for her pleasure or not) and not threaded/spiraly?

The channel would indicate threaded, where the channel collects whatever material is scraped away by the screwing-in action.

However, the pic looks like it's merely ribbed, which makes no sense as the first rib is going to ream out the hole to the point that the 2nd one and beyond will do nothing.

However, if you do get them out, it'd be a fine opportunity to replace them with threaded inserts. That would make future replacement of the corner caps easier. Probably eliminate the need to fill the holes, as well.

Is the hole accessible from the other side?
If so punch from back

Replacing all corners, skid trays etc that have rivets

Can't access from back. Don't go all the way thru

Tried prying them off with a screwdriver but didn't budge much and felt like I was gouging wood in process

If you are replacing the corners i would be seriously tempted to just take a chisel and break the corners of the caps off so you can get a tool underneath or to grab them and just pull the rivets out.

Why fart around if you are going to replace the caps anyways.

This way they will come out clean and you wont have to fill any wood.

Re: How to remove Marshall rivets?

Just pull them out like nails. Breaking or grinding the heads off is gonna make them way harder to get out...

Re: How to remove Marshall rivets?

I'd love to just pry them out using pliers or whatever and I don't care about shredding the corner pieces because I'm going to replace them. The challenge is getting something under the corners/rivets like a screwdriver or putty knife that will let me pull up the head of the rivet far enough to grasp with pliers w/o completely gouging the wood in the process.

Basically, those rivets are exactly as pictured above and really grip into the wood and don't want to come out unless you use a lot of force. I might try drilling one out just to see how it goes but all I have is a hand drill and that could get messy.

I dont know of an elegant way to do it. You will either be drilling, prying or smashing something. I still vote to try taking a chisel and hit it going straight down by the corner tab to break off the plastic by the rivet. That way you can expose it and get vice grips on it or something.

Re: How to remove Marshall rivets?

Tap a thin prybar/screwdriver/etc underneath the edge of the corner and pry the whole thing up, either the corner will beak off exposing more rivet, or it'll pull out the rivet... Edgecrushers method would work too assuming they're plastic... If they're metal corners, it will be hard to do that tho...

Re: How to remove Marshall rivets?

Use a pry bar 1-2 ft long so you can get some adequate force to pull them up. I have a similar bar to the one linked below. It has slits on both ends that slide under the nail head around the shaft so you can pull it directly out. You would use the straight-end to shove under the corner and wiggle a bit to get the rivet head to rise a bit so you could then shove the rounded-end directly under the rivert head on top of the corner. I can't tell you how many things I've used my 18-inch pry bar for around the house. Seriously, it's probably one of my most used tools from flooring to automotive to music gear.

In case someone else ever needs to tackle this one

Flat tip screwdriver and prying is the only thing that works
