I know duncan color codes their magnets. I cant remember which color is which magnet, but maybe someone else can help you out with that

There are roughcast and polished magnets.
Here you can see the difference between roughcast and polished but otherwise it´s hard to tell which is which.

in my experience it's easy to tell if you have a ceramic because it's basically black and doesn't really feel the same as metal.
the alnico's are much harder to tell apart since they are just look like a bar of silver-ish metal. Though the A8's I've had have been darker than the other alnico types.

Put it in your project pickup, and if it doesn't sound good, change it.
