Re: How to tell magnets apart....

I know duncan color codes their magnets. I cant remember which color is which magnet, but maybe someone else can help you out with that

Unfortunately, it's from not a duncan, so colour codes are no good. It's from a guitar that was originally bought at Wal-mart. I took it apart for something to do.

alnico is generally shiny, silvery, i believe. ceramic is a kinda matte dark grey.

Interesting. Is 8 the highest value and is the grading system resembling how magnetic a given magnet might be?

Google is your friend. Just do a search for magnet grades, or download the literature available at sensmag or other magnet maker.

in my experience it's easy to tell if you have a ceramic because it's basically black and doesn't really feel the same as metal.

the alnico's are much harder to tell apart since they are just look like a bar of silver-ish metal. Though the A8's I've had have been darker than the other alnico types.

The answer is:

No, you can't tell what grade a magnet is just for the looks.
