HS strat wiring question

I just changed my Strat to a HS configuration, and I am a little confused about the wiring. I am using the standard 5-way switch, 1vol, 2 tones, a JB in the bridge and a stock MIM Strat Neck.

I would love to have this setup if possible, not necessarily in this order.
B
B + N (hum canceling, not sure about series or parallel)
N
B (split) + N (hum canceling, not sure about series or parallel)
B (split)

Also, I have a wire coming off the trem claw as well and one screwed to the body, do this both need to be grounded, or just one or the other?

This should do it:

. . . with one exception - there's no "good" way to hook up two tone controls to this configuration. If you must have two, connect one to the terminal with the bridge black wire and the other to the terminal with the neck white wire.

If it was me, I'd use one tone control and use the hole for some other purpose. ;)

Re: HS strat wiring question

"B + N (hum canceling, not sure about series or parallel)" can't be hum canceling, short of splitting the bridge pickup, which would create a duplicate position. Combinations of neck and bridge pickups will be in parallel.

As far as the tone controls, connecting them to the start leads as Artie mentioned would work, however I find 2 volumes and a master tone a better layout.

The trem claw wire grounds the strings. The wire screwed to the body serves to ground the conductive paint lining the cavity, which helps to shield RF interference. Yes, you want them both connected to a common ground.

"B + N (hum canceling, not sure about series or parallel)" can't be hum canceling . . .

Mike; One of the things I've found, is that you don't need a very close "balance" between the two coils to still be hum-cancelling. With two "north" coils to one "south" coil, it won't be perfect, but I doubt the noise will be noticable. Maybe. ;)

Re: HS strat wiring question

Thanks for the help guys, I got it wired up, and I had to take out the jumper between the two pins on the red and white side and connect the red and white wires only on the pin closest to the grounded pin because it seemed to be splitting the bridge on both of the notch positions.

I'm still not sure if I have everything right, because the notch positions sound really weak and tinny. I Had read on one of the HSS schematics that the green and black need switched if using fenders and duncans, so I think I may just need to swap the green and black wires back to their normal positions. I think you only need to do for mixing mixing with the RWRP middle, or im I way off base?

I did cut out one of the pots and just have it as a 1 vol 1 tone, but im thinking about doing 2 vol 1 tone instead.

Re: HS strat wiring question

I should have said "won't" instead of "can't." I've experienced 60 cycle hum with a full humbucker and a single coil. I suppose the degree of the hum would be dependent on the strength of the pickups. I just don't want anyone to think there's no possibility of hum in that position, because there certainly is.

By removing that jumper you lose the bridge split when the bridge pickup is selected. I also didn't pay close attention to the diagram before, but positions 2, 4, and 5 all split the bridge pickup. Remove the jumper and move the R/W "up" one terminal (or down, depending on which way you want the switch to work.

Dang . . . sorry about that guys. I doodled this up on paper first, then transposed the wrong one to Paint. :yell:

Pic fixed.
