Hello Forum ,

Need your help finding the best middle pickup , I will use it for cleans (position 4 on 5 way standard switch) upon autosplit with SH2N in the neck.

So it must be non noise cancelling so that when combined with a coil from the SH2N , Hum Cancellation occurs.

So what would it be the best pickup for that.?

I am leaning towards the SSL-2 vintage flat or the SSL-1 Lipstick tube. both are Alnico IV , low output pickups , but which of them will be better with the SH2N , and is there any other alternatives that I don't see .

waiting for you guys , thanks.

First, what kind of sound do you want? What guitar and amp?

I thought the SSL-2 was A5?

Yes, the SSL2 is A5, and it's around 6k. A nice 'building block' single coil - plenty of brilliance and harmonic overtones, more emphasis on highs and lows. I think lipsticks have weaker output, so you'll get more of a drop in volume when you switch to it.

If you want it to be hum cancelling it has to be rw/rp in relation to the humbuckers.

Ditto. Be sure to get a "middle" version of whatever single you decide on. (That, of course, assumes you'll be splitting to the humbuckers "stud" coil.)

Is it a must to be rw/rp? if it is a standard wound , will it hum even when split with a coil from the Sh2N.

The guitar is Jackson Soloist Professional Japan 1990. The have routed the neck position for humbucker as it was single coil , my amp is Engl Fireball , the bridge pickup is a hybrid i have made between Duncan distortion and Gibson 498t and changed the magnet to alnico 8. i will use position 4 for cleans only as i will auto split with a coil from the SH2N i have installed in the neck position.

is it a must for the middle pickup to be rw/rp for hum cancelling when split with a coil from the neck or the bridge humbuckers on position 2 and 4?

Yep, it'll hum if it's not rw. If it's just rp, the mix positions using the single will be out of phase, so you'll get that lower output, honky, screamy sound.

If you use a Duncan in the middle you don't want a rw/rp if you want to split with the slug coil. Duncan rw/rp is N up. Duncan humbuckers are N to slug. You need a standard single.

If you use a Dimarzio you will want rw/rp.

The significance of the magnetic polarity and coil winding direction of the central single coil pickup depend upon which coil of the neck/Rhythm position humbucker will be operational when that pickup is coil split.

Unless the operational coil of the humbucker and the central single coil are of closely matched output, hum will not be totally cancelled.
