HSH Wiring

Hey all, does anyone know how to wire Position 3 to activate both inner coils of the humbuckers in a HSH configuration?

Thanks.

Re: HSH Wiring

Unfortunately it’s not doable with a standard five way switch… you’ll need to use a super switch in order to pull it off. Assuming that’s not a dealbreaker, I can come up with a diagram for you. What pickups are you using?

Re: HSH Wiring

You'd also have to flip the magnet in one of the humbuckers to make the inner coils hum-cancelling, I think.

Re: HSH Wiring

I'm fine with buying a superswitch, thanks for taking the time to help me. I have G&B pickups that came in a PRS SE.

As Mincer said, I'll have to take apart one pickup and flip the magnet for hum-cancellation?

Re: HSH Wiring

OK… I can come up with something for you. I am just starting my day right now so I won’t be able to work on it until after work tonight which will be several hours, but I will see what I can do.

Re: HSH Wiring

Re magnet flip - if removing the cover is a pain can’t you also wire the outer coil in place of the inner coil and turn the pickup around so that it hum cancels?

Re: HSH Wiring

Really, all you would need to do is flip one of the pickups around so that the screws and slugs were in the same position as one another (both top or both bottom). Unfortunately, if you have logos on the pickups or if they are zebras, then you have one pickup that is noticeably mounted upside down. Chrome or gold covers, or single-color humbuckers without logos are really only noticeable if you’re looking for the positions of the screw and slug coils.

Re: HSH Wiring

Hey vel0c1ty, how many volumes and tone controls? Also, are positions 2 & 4 using the humbuckers split or full along with the center p’up?

1 Volume, 1 Tone.

Position 2: Inner Bridge Coil + Middle

Position 4: Outer Neck Coil + Middle

That's from a standard autosplit wiring. If I had Position 2 be the Outer Bridge Coil + Middle, would it sound good?

Again, thanks for your time. I tried figuring this out myself and didn't get anywhere.

I’m sure it would sound fine, but the reason they’re using the inner coil from the bridge with the center is that it’s hum-canceling. If we leave it as is, all 5 positions will be silent.

Gotcha.

Okay vel0c1ty, here ya go:

Sorry it took so long... I literally fell asleep last night doing it! [emoji42]

It should work good for you but, as has been mentioned by numerous folks here, you need to flip the orientation of the neck pickup in order to make it work correctly for inside coils on 3. Whether that’s done with the magnet or just by turning around the pickup is completely up to you.

Let me know if you have any questions... and enjoy! [emoji2]

Re: HSH Wiring

If I had an HSH, this is how I would wire it, too. Thanks, BriGuy.

Thank you so much, man. Which superswitch would you reccomend based on build quality and feel?

Oh yeah, could I switch the bridge pickup for the same effect in Position 3 and to make it Middle + Outside Bridge Coil in Position 2? Or can it only be the neck pickup?

Yes and no.

That’s certainly a possibility, but if you want it that way instead I’ll have to redraw the diagram to reverse the way the splits are set up. In its current state, if you reverse the bridge pickup instead, you’ll have outside coils instead of inside coils for position 3.

Ok, thanks. I appreciate all the help. Is there any real tonal difference in the two different Positon 2's or would it be negligible?

Re: HSH Wiring

In my opinion there’s not enough difference to worry about, but I’d be lying if I told you that there was no difference whatsoever.

Hook it up this way and listen to how position 2 sounds, then turn the bridge p’up around try it again. If you really like it better the other way, then...

1) Move the wire that connects the commons between A and C to connect the commons between B and D

2) Reverse the hot and ground connections to that are currently connected to the commons on C and D

3) turn the neck pickup back around to normal
