Hss coil tap wiring

Hi all, just signed up to the forum.
I'm having my first go at rewiring a strat that has two single coils and a single coil size humbucker.
I've attached pictures of the old wiring (not done by me). The previous owner had a coil tap on the tone, but the pot broke and he superglued it???
So I'm planning on replacing it all using the wiring diagram from the website.
It looks straight forward enough. Any pros or cons to this method?

Cheers

Matt

Welcome to the forum!

I think you mean split? Tapping is something electrically different, and I don't want to confuse people. I will say that the wiring is sort of a mess, but the diagram is accurate, so just replace the parts and let us know how it turns out!

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

A disadvantage compared to normal Strat wiring is that you won't have separate tone controls for any pickups, they'll all share one.

Regarding the coil split; depending on which humbucker it is, either the humbucker will be a lot louder than the single coils or the split will be a lot quieter (and possibly very weak in that scenario).

Also that's a manual split with no autosplit in position 4 when combining the bridge and middle pickup. It's handy if you just want to split the humbucker and have a strat like sound, but if you want go from full humbucker to a split quacky middle sound you would have to switch to position 4 and use the push/pull. Usually what I like to do is have an auto split using the 5 way switch along with the push/pull split (for easy quack accessing in position 4). Sometimes I also make using the push/pull turn the bridge pickup on in any position while it also splits the humbucker, that way I can get a super 7 kind of thing going on as well where the bridge and neck, or all 3 pickups (the bridge being split) are on at once.

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

Sorry, you must think I'm an ignorant arse. I normally get notifications of replies through the app...

OK, so I've done it and double checked and triple checked but I am only getting tone control on the humbucker, not the two single coils... Any ideas?

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

I don't see how that could be possible, the tone pot is connected to the volume pot so couldn't know which pickup was active

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

So what you are saying is that it's wired to work on all of them, so if it's working on the humbucker then it's working full stop?

Is it likely to be more subtle on the single coils?

It's wired that the output of the selector switch is sent to the volume control (then to the output) and is also affected by the tone control. So if the selector switch does switch to the single coils for the output and the tone control works on the humbucker then it must be working on the single coils too.

Maybe if the humbucker has a hot output then it may make the tone more noticeable? I have no idea about that really; I'd expect the tone rolloff to be very noticeable on them all.

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

I'll plug it in to a proper amp later.. There is a chance that I am deaf, stupid or both...

It's got a . 47 cap in it, that shouldn't make any difference should it?

Should make it even more noticeable than if it was a .022 lol

I bet you find later that it's working fine.

I remember I once re-wired a Jazz bass and thought the tone control wasn't working properly but it was just that at the time I was so used to my P bass with a .1 cap which is much more drastic.

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

I'll put it back together later and crank it up properly... Whilst ordering a new soldering iron stand.. And scratchplate..

Re: Hss coil tap wiring

Sounds pretty good. It's actually my guitar teachers guitar, but he won't touch wiring.
