HSS position 2

I just put in a 59 trembucker to replace the C/59 hybrid in my strat. Currently it’s wired so that the split HB coil and middle single are wired together in parallel, but am considering trying just the HB with no split coil to create a slightly different tone.

Since the 59 is already a lower output PAF, running the split coil in parallel with the antiquity surfers makes for a pretty weak sounding position 2.

Would running the full HB in parallel with the SC help achieve getting a more fuller tone in pos 2?

Oh yeah, it would raise the overall output of that position by something like 50% but I think you'd lose some of the quackiness

I quite like a full HB mixed with the middle single. It adds much more meat to my least favorite position of a strat.

Re: HSS position 2

What made you get rid of the 59/Custom?

I found that in my strat, which is mahogany body, maple/rosewood neck, that the 59/C had just a little too much midrange. To my ears it was perceived as a little muddy, compared up the 59 which has a scooped midrange.

Ironically, the hybrid was a very bright pickup in my old Hamer which was mahogany with maple cap.

Yes, but expect an increase in 60 cycle hum.

Re: HSS position 2

This brings up an idea...

On my PRS I have the antiquities, and use a partial split resistor to add a little more body to the split coil sounds. If I wanted to wire this in to my strat so that the total collective resistance of the 59TB split is around 6k-7k, where would I add the resistor?

I’m using a super switch and not a push/pull pot.

Thanks

Which HB coil are you splitting? If you're using the coil closest to the bridge, try the coil closest to the neck. It gets more string vibration so should be louder when split. Might solve your problem.

Anyone have an idea about this?

I have an idea but not sure if it's right . I think it would just simply go after the "split" (red or white) wire and before it hits the switch. that would put your resistor in series with that one coil whenever it's active, and so if you had like a 2K resistor and that was wired in series with the 5k of your 59's coil, you'd get your 7k total series resistance. Just going from automotive.. I'm not sure how straight up resistors are used in guitars, but that's how you'd do it in a car if you wanted to add resistance to a light bulb or something.

So in the strat wiring, would it be connected directly to the same terminal that the red/white wires are connected to on the 5 way switch? I know how to wire this on a push pull pot, but the super switch confuses me a bit [emoji23]

Ok disclaimer, to be perfectly honest I don't know for sure and have never used a super switch, but how I would do it is solder the resistor in between the wire and the switch, so the circuit goes from pickup, thru the resistor, then thru the switch. Cause you'd want the entire path from that coil of the pickup , thru the resistor into the switch, to be a series. Then when it hits the switch it parallels with the single coil and all that.

I'm not sure how it would work if you separately wired the resistor to the same lug. Maybe it would but again I'm not sure

Just look where the red and white go to ground and put the resistor there. My favorite values for partial splits were 4k 6k and 10k.
