HSS Wiring Question

Hey there,

I've been doing a lot of searches for HSS wiring diagrams for a single volume and single tone pot configuration, and I've seen a lot of people talking about how they don't wire the humbucker to the tone pot. As I've been looking at wiring diagrams, I'm not finding any that show the humbucker as only hitting the volume pot. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Matt

edit: Would I need to install a super strat switch to accomplish what I'm after? Just to clarify, I'm interested in the following configuration:

HB > 300k master vol pot > output jack
SC (middle) > 300k master vol pot > 250k master tone pot (w/.022uf cap) > output jack
SC (neck) > 300k master vol pot > 250k master tone pot (w/.022uf cap) > output jack

Re: HSS Wiring Question

Are you planning to use a five way pickup selector and the normal configuration (bridge, bridge+center, center, neck+center, neck)?

Re: HSS Wiring Question

If you don't plan on splitting just take a standard Strat diagram and replace the bridge pickup with the humbucker (solder the red and white wires together).

If you want the pickups to automatically split in the 4th position, do this:

Re: HSS Wiring Question

Thanks for those diagrams, Christopher. I actually found both of those prior to posting, and the reason I'm still not sure I know what I need to do is because those diagrams show a separate tone pot for each of the single coils. I'll be using a master tone for both the middle and neck SCs.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to wire the 5-way selector so that the humbucker lead doesn't go to the tone pot. The 5-way selector has 4 lugs on each side. It looks like the lugs on the side opposite where the individual pickup leads connect have something to do with it. Sorry if that doesn't make sense - I'm just thinking out loud.

All right, Matt... this should work for ya.

Just one thing. It’s not so much that the bridge pickup isn’t connected to the tone control, but rather that the bridge position of the switch is not. In other words, when you’re in position 2 (bridge + center) the tone control will affect BOTH pickups. When you’re playing the bridge ‘bucker by itself, though, the tone control is ineffective.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: HSS Wiring Question

Just posting to say that BriGuy's diagram was spot on - worked like a charm! Just had to reverse the lugs on the pots so that they tapered in the right direction. But that's sort of like wiring an electric motor and checking rotation: you've got a 50:50 shot at getting it right the first time. But I digress...thanks again, BriGuy!
