i have the not even slinky set (56-12) on the standard E tuning on my guitar. it's a set neck with a string-through thingie. i thought of putting it up on the standard tuning to practise my hands on a hard tension before tuning it down, but i'm a bit worried of the stress it's putting on my neck. should i tune it down as soon as i can or is there no reason to worry ?

Re: huge string tension ?

If you increase the tension on the neck by running thick strings at standard tuning, you may have to adjust the truss rod to work out a bit of bow in the neck. Though, you may have to loosen the truss rod again when you tune down. I don't think you'll damage the neck with heavier strings on it at E standard tuning. Remember that way back when, heavy strings were the norm. That's why the truss rod was invented, to support the neck against string tension.

Re: huge string tension ?

I´ve played 12-52 in standard and 13-60 in D for years with no issues.

as Koreth stated that´s why the truss rod is adjustable, and earlier 12s and 13s were the norm with 11s being considered "light". Side note, these sets usually had a wound G, meaning the G polepiece needs to be higher to get the same volume. This is one of the contributing factors to overpowering G strings when using vintage staggered pickups with 10s and lighter ;)
