Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister questions

Ok, I spent some time with the TM 18 yest and was hella impressed.. I had thought I wanted the 5 until I played one. Didnt have the headroom I wanted. The 18 was pretty killer across the board.

There is no 36s avail for me to try. Anyone had the chance to play both the 18 and the 36?

You think the 18 would be giggable for a small sitch? Prolly fine if miced huh?

For anyone with exp with the 36:
How does the 36 differ? Has reverb right? anything else?
Is there much difference?? Does the 36 still get pretty quiet like the 18?
any other differences that justify the extra cost??

Thanks

Re: Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister questions

No experience with the 36 but there is some solid info on it.

It has reverb. It also has midi controlled power scaling (so besides the standard settings you get with the switch/dial on the back, you could make a midi setting which runs it at 25.5 Watts or 14.87 Watts (just some random settings....if you would want that). Don't forget the "silent setting" either.

Seperate EQ for both the clean and dirt channels (18 has a single EQ for both)

Instead of an OP amp (for the lead boost) it has an extra pre amp tube. (Nothing but a clean boost... No idea why people get upset when they hear it has an OP amp...)

The 18 is loud enough for small venues so the 36 should be more then enough.

Re: Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister questions

All these amps have op amps creating distortion, but they sound good. At $945 the 36 is real nice amp.

Re: Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister questions

thanks! Im just wondering if I should got 18 or 36. I like the extra features, but not the extra cost.. Of course, I need another amp like I need a hole in my head.....

Re: Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister questions

The 18 is surprisingly loud, probably because of the big iron in it. I'm sure it's plenty loud especially through a 212 or 412. You typically have to dime the clean channel for it to keep up with the gain channel, but it breaks up nicely there and cleans up perfectly, so I'm fine with that.

I haven't tried the 36 yet, and I'm sorta setting my sights on that one for the clean headroom.

With GC/MF's 15% coupons, it brings the $959 price tag down considerably. To me, it may be the most versatile tube head I've ever seen. I think you can switch between the clean channel running at 36, and the gains running at any other output level.

Trust me, 18w tube and even ss at times is enough for gigging. Tubes get overdriven, and it isn't called overdriven for no reason. If it says 18w, you really can be overdriving it up to twice the power easily (without getting into watts =/= power. I know that, just using this as an example). Plus, 15w tube is all you really ever need in terms of volume, as it will be loud enough for situations where a micing the gear is unnecessary, and anything else it can be miced. If 18w has the headroom and features you want, go for it.

True, my Tweaker does a great job of making neighbors angry thru a 2 or 4 12.
