HUM After installing Blackout preamp

I just installed the Blackout Modular preamp and now I have serious hum/buzz. I can walk around the room and find one certain spot where it is not too bad but the hum is still present.
Any where else in the room and the Hum/Buzz is real bad...I have checked ,checked and checked again all the wiring and I can't see anything wrong????
Maybe it is the pickup??? I am using a Carvin S22 Metal covered pick-up. All I have is 1 pick-up and 1 volume pot. It is wired like this. http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=BMP_1H_1V

Any Ideas what could be causing this? I thought the Blackouts Modular Pre-amp was hum canceling.

Thanks-

Yep, the bridge is connected to one of the grounds on the preamp.
Could it be that this pickup is not made to work with the active preamp?
It sounds great and all but the buzz is unbearable

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

Try one of the other grounds on the module?

By the look of its made to work with a passive pickup? So as long as its passive it should be right.

I dont know much about those to tell you the truth/

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

There are only 2 grounds on the module, both are being used.
One ground to the bridge and the other to the ground on the jack

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

Could you try another pickup on it? seems odd on such a simple circuit. Have you tried pulling out all the wires and screwing them down again? It could be a bad connection at the screw terminals.

Wish i knew haha.

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

How do Carvin conductor colour codes compare to Duncan? You may have connected up in the wrong order and, hence, not be getting hum-cancellation. The pre-amp then boosts this.

All the right colours. Not necessarily in the right order.

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

as per this diagram http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=BMP_1H_1V
It sounds the best this way. I have swapped the green and white wires around and the red and black. Still have the Buzz.if I walk around I can find a sweet spot in the room where the buzz is manageable but if I move an inch it is back. This is really frustrating. For such a simple wiring set up too.
I guess the Carvins just don't play well with the Blackout Preamp.

It would also be nice if they listed the inputs on the Blackout pre…..They have all the outs listed but not the in's, WTF???

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

Carvin and Duncan use the same four colours but in a different sequence. You need to "translate" them.

Carvin RED = Duncan BLACK
Carvin WHITE = Duncan WHITE
Carvin GREEN = Duncan RED
Carvin BLACK = Dunacn GREEN

Thanks to the screw-in system of the Blackouts Pre-Amp, it will take you only moments to test this.

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

Do you have a multimeter? It can be used to eliminate possible mistakes, so that you know where in the circuit the problem exists.

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

I am going to assume that the lack of any further communication from the OP indicates a successful solution to this problem. The baby has been burped, as it were.

YOU DA MAN!!!!! That was it, Thank you very much.
It sounds a lot better now , more gain and smoother EQ.
I was about ready to give up on it and you saved the day.
Rock on brother, have a happy new year!!!!!!!

Re: HUM After installing Blackout preamp

Probably time that the Pickup Color Codes Translation page had an update to include Carvin and, for that matter, Ibanez.

Yeah, It's like they want to keep us in the dark.
Without your help I would have wrote this pre-amp off.
Now my Dean sings……thanks again, great forum!
