Hum to tele bridge mounting ring

Has anyone ever tried one of these humbucker to tele bridge conversion mounting rings? And why is the pickup installed backwards? Does it matter soundwise?

And I'm not sure the pickup will be spaced the same distance from the bridge compared to a regular tele bridge setup. Might sound less bright being further away right?

Hmmm. Lots of questions.

I think it'd just be one of those things you have to try. It might sound just like a Tele, it might sound nothing like a Tele. But it will definitely sound like a single coil mounted in a humbucker cavity, that I do know!!!

You're probably right! How much of the tele sound is attributed to the pickup being attached to the bridge anyway?

Re: Hum to tele bridge mounting ring

In my experience, other guitars and configurations can come close to a Tele - my Music Man Reflex with pickups in parallel mode comes really close - but I've yet to find one that can do it fully.

No matter how close any of my guitars come, whenever I go from one to my Tele, it's like "oh, there it is..."

Of course, I've mentioned elsewhere on these boards that even my Tele didn't do it until I got rid of the Fender N3 pickups (replaced with TV Jones Starwood - MUCH better) - now it's all the way there!

I was going to ask about pickups as well so thanks for the suggestion.

So I plan on getting a proper tele sometime soon but in the meantime I thought I'd try this.

Well, I think the Tele 'sound' is a combination of factors- not just the pickup. But something like this, with the right pickup (like a Vintage Broadcaster Tele) it might come 85% of the way there. For some, that is enough (it is, for me), and for some that last 15% makes all the difference.

For this guitar, my warmoth, I'd be happy with 85% there. It's got a mahogany back with maple top. The neck is also mahogany with a pau ferro fingerboard. Not your typical tele woods. Would the broadcaster still be your recommendation?

If it's staggered like a Strat and reversed, it will make very subtle changes to string emphasis and articulation. Not something the average listener would really hear much. Usually tele pickups either have no stagger or only the middle D and G are raised, so flipping it would do nothing to the sound. Most likely it's installed that way to fit the Tele baseplate into a humbucker route.

Looks about the right distance from the bridge saddles to me. The bridge pickup on a tele isn't right next to the bridge. However, sticking it in a Les Paul type with different woods and a capped construction and set neck is going to do more the change the sound than the distance of that pickup.

Re: Hum to tele bridge mounting ring

i assume its mounted backwards do to the shape of the bobbin fitting in the bucker rout better. personally i prefer the jd over the broadcaster but i prefer warmer pups. the broadcaster might be a good fit for that guitar. fender or gibson scale?

It's a fender scale and a bolt on neck.

Since the route is a rectangle I don't understand why it couldn't fit the other way around just the same.

Re: Hum to tele bridge mounting ring

I don't know if you already have one picked out or not yet but I've got a Reverend Greesy T Tele bridge pickup that might work out well for this? It's designed for a Reverend Buckshot where it would be direct mounted into a Korina (White Limba/White Mahogany) body & not a metal bridge.

Basically it's made to sound like a normal Tele bridge mounted pickup without being set in the bridge. If you want it I'll give it to you for like $20? I don't own the Buckshot anymore so it's not doing anything but taking up space....

Thanks. Even though it sounds like a good match with it being designed for a mahogany type guitar I think I'm going to go with a different pickup which eventually will go into an ash or alder tele.

Re: Hum to tele bridge mounting ring

the angle of the pup and the shape of the bobbin? no idea without looking at one but if it fits the other way than theres no reason you couldnt put it in there like that
