Humbucker AND single coil in bridge.

Is it possible to fit an little 59 and a single coil next to one another in a standard humbucker slot?


Some old threads seem to say the magnetic fields are too close and it causes problems. Any thoughts? I've tried tapping/splitting a standard 59 and don't like the sound much. I'd probably just wire a switch to have humbucker OR single coil.

Both the drawing and the siring diagram seem fine to me. I don't know about tue magnetic field being to close to each other. From the diagram, I understand that you want to use it as a SSS "strat" or as a single humbucker, correct? Wouldn't you rather use the SPDT switch for the humbucker and the neck single to alternate between SSS and SSH?

A few have done this sort of thing before.....with success it is fair to say.

The only thing that I can add is that from a theory standpoint the two magnetic fields are very likely to affect each other by the 2 pickups' proximity.....meaning tonally they will be slightly to moderately different to what you would have found them to be mounted alone. I haven't yet read any opinion to say that the effect is bad though.

Another option is spin-a-split to make for a partial split, or perhaps switching in a fixed resistor for the same effect without having to mount the switch.

Not only is it possible, it has been done and there is another thread about it on this forum. That thread has a link to an article (maybe Premier Guitar?) where they did that exact mod to a Strat. Search and ye shall find!

The magnetic field is indeed altered, and the ceramic in the rails can degauss the Alnico over time if oriented incorrectly. Orient them NSN or SNS depending on what single coil you have.

Wow guys, thanks a lot for all the suggestions! I lifted the wiring diagram from a blog post, I've forgotten. I must admit I've not heard of a p-rail, will check it out.

Thanks, I'm struggling to find any, can you help? I've always missed a humbucker in the bridge and at the same time the single coil, I prefer to play one guitar at gigs.

Hi,
I have a 59/Custom (11.5 K) in my bridge on my Strat. I cut it so the middle single coil is not as close as yours, but almost touching. The sound of those two together is very Jimi Hendrix like because that s.coil is so much closer to the bridge it really takes a nice chunk of power and seems to share equally with the s.coil. I mean to say it takes the louder p'up down and stay very clean. Louder than two s.coils, but still a shimmering sound. I love it and will never change it.
