Humbucker bridge for a Stack Strat

Hi all,
i'm building a HSS pickguartd for a strat. I play mainly Judas/Maiden staff and very rarely Blackmore/YJM/Metallica. I already have two single-coils i will experiment with (Switch them b/n neck and middle):
Seymour Duncan Vintage Hot Stack Plus Strat STK-S7
Seymour Duncan Custom Stack Plus Strat STK-S6
I'm looking for a bridge H bridge. My search brought me to these options:

A) Dimarzio Titan Bridge DP259
B) Duncan Pegasus
C) Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid
D) Duncan Custom 8
E) Duncan Black winter
F) Duncan Custom Custom

any comments are appreciated.

Of those choices, 59/Custom.

The JB can give more versatility, and the Custom more punch.

You'll get better help by indicating the tonewoods of that Strat.

Hey there, I’ve tried different PUs in a strat. (JB, EMG SL20)
So far I’ve settled with a modern Dave Murray-ish setup. Hotrails in bridge/neck and lil ‘59 in mid position. Although the setup is a quite hot, I really like the tones in position 1, 3 and 5.
I’ve got a rather bright AM strat, so the growl from those single coil sized hums is just what I needed.
Position 2 and 4 deliver a more stratty, out of phase-ish vibe that reminds me more of the classic single coil tones. This might be due to the wiring.
Imo, you can’t go wrong with a JB tho, I’ve put one in a Squier Jazzmaster along with a SD Jazz hum (SH2N) and that thing just sings, it’s one of my favorite guitars now tbh.
Cheers from Munich, Germany

I have hybrids in strats and love it. But I have them paired with lower output SC and play less heavy stuff. If it had fit your style I love the Custom Custom in a strat. Of your list I would say custom given what you play.

Re: Humbucker bridge for a Stack Strat

Question is which Custom: Custom, Custom Custom, Custom 5 or Custom 8 ?

I would vote Custom 8. I'm not sure how much the Strat would colour it but it is a very versatile pickup. Cleans up pretty well with a good amp and it can do both more aggressive styles and tamer rock.

The A8 does a great job smoothing the snarly attack of the Custom while also beefing up the overall sound. Great for leads and rhythm alike, and it's both smooth and cutting at the same time. My C8 has done everything from clean to rock, to metal, to Swedish melodic death.

Give it a go! Worst case you swap the magnet out and end up with a different version of the Custom

Re: Humbucker bridge for a Stack Strat

Do you want a darker or brighter sound than what you currently have?

Re: Humbucker bridge for a Stack Strat

I had a PATB-3B in the bridge of a similar hss strat and it was fantastic for Maiden.

It was more scooped than I wanted for other stuff so it may not have enough mids for Priest for example, but the business for Maiden. Probably great for Metalica too

The bass and treble are defined and strong yet pleasant without being at all flubby / shrill respectively.

At a guess, something like a 59/custom hybrid or JB may be better for Priest.
I take it you´d be largely using singles for Blackmore / Malmsteen.
Hope that helps.

Go for a Custom Custom. Or at least something from the Custom family and a bunch of magnets.

Re: Humbucker bridge for a Stack Strat

go with the custom custom, it really does smooth out the strat bright bridge sound. great pick up

I think i'm looking for just a little bit more output.
If i put a A8 in one of the following which you think will get me closer to B6 M7/8 T7/9 . Looking for a bit hotter then Perpetual Burn output. I have Perpetual Burn in my other guitar and completely love it, so i'm very tempted to go for a PB8. If it doesn't work i can always put Perpetual Burn 8 in the bridge and pair with Perpetual Burn in the neck in my other axe and see where it goes.

- Perpetual Burn A8
- (Regular) Custom A8
- '59™/Custom Hybrid A8

Nevertheless i think for the purpose of this exercise either Custom 8 or Hybrid 8 will do it. Any idea if Hybrid 8 will get me near the 15-17k output of a JB/Alt8? If it does i think this is what i will be going for :)

When you say C8 you mean Custom SH-5 + A8? DId you swap the magnet yourself or did you order if from the custom shop? If you used the custom shop, what did you put in the desc?
