Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

I have a really wimpy sounding, hss guitar, that I want to thicken up.Anybody have a suggestion, and please don't tell me to change the hardware because I already have that in the works. The huimbucker that is really wimpy is a Dimarzio Super D!

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Super Distortion wimpy? Try a Tone Zone or a Crunch Lab. A Duncan Distortion might do the trick too.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

What guitar woods? Does it have a trem bridge?

My first thought was a PATB trembucker, assuming it is has a trem bridge. If by wimpy you mean low output, an Invader or Alt 8 would be great high output choices.

Howdy,

I can only say that the most muscular sounding HBer I've ever played is a DiMarzio 36th anni PAF, which happily resides in the bridge of my ES-335. It's middy and rather "fat" sounding, yet retains adequate clarity. Good luck!

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Serious answer - figure out what is wrong with the SuperD wiring....

wow i have heard the DSD called a lot of things but NEVER whimpy?
Get a tone zone, that pup will cure any weak sounding guitar instantly and of the thicker/fatter/ballsier pu's out there is still has great definition and dynamics something the INVADER lacks:cool2:

This^1. Or, if it is even a DSD. Some have thought they had it, only to realize later that they had a Super Distortion 2(totally different).

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

I'd say dimarzio tone zone, SD alt 8 (i have one in a double fat strat and it slays), invader or one of the PATB pickups

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

I too think that the super-d has something wrong with it. Try checking it with a multimeter. I'm guessing its either got a broken coil or its got a short somewhere which is making it work on one coil only

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

I had this issue once- i traded the guitar for something heavier.

That day there was an Asian Charvel in the store. It was a toss up between the Schecter Diamond series & Charvel: sentimentally, i took the Charvel. Oddly enough, it had all the extra mass & resonance i needed to get the chunk back outa my Dunc Distortion Sh6. (i wont say what the too lite guitar was, but it rung like a tennis racquet unplugged).

Unplugged it was significantly more mass, but not heavyduty SO much more. So my 2 cents is, is it tradeable? If not, cool. If so, it could be like $50 coupon to something that grants your Super D or whatnot the ballsiness, woodiness & resonance you want from the start. Because if its not there at the start ( in the guitar), then the balls may just sound dialed in ultimately.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

Wimpy is a horrible description, by the way...wimpy how?

and TZ is not a bad alternate to the super D...thicker, bassier, ballsier IMO, but just a little. Definitely hotter.

By wimpy I mean that there is no sustain, very thin, no balls. Almost everything about the guitar is cheap so a year ago I added the Super D and I was not impressed. The wiring for the pickup isn't screwed up, probably the wiring for the guitar is the problem.

Re: Humbucker for a wimpy guitar

If Super D is "wimpy", I don't think TZ is gonna be enough for this guy, I say go Blackout Metal or at least Invader
