humbucker magnet dimensions

you folks have me hooked. I'm going to try some magnet swaps. What size dimensions do I need to look for in magnets to fit SD humbuckers? Do the "regular" magnets at Addiction FX or Mojotone fit SD's OK?

What do you think an A4 (or a uoA5) in a Jazz to tame some highs but retain clarity, and a A8 or uoA5 in a JB to tame some of the "honk"?

Re: humbucker magnet dimensions

They're pretty much standardized. 2.5" long (occasionally 2.25"), half inch wide, 1/8" thick.

Re: humbucker magnet dimensions

For the Jazz, UOA5 will tame some highs and give it a little more dynamics.

For the JB, a lot of forumites like an A2 to tame highs and give some lower mids. An A8 also works to give better/fuller mids, but it will also give it a boost in output as well.

As Zhang said, 2.5" x 0.5" x 0.125". You will also see some mags from 2.25" - 2.44" long as well. Some say that the shorter mags give a little less focus to the sound, but it is very slight IMO. In fact, I can't tell the difference. I usually order the full 2.5" length just because it is a little easier to work with when exchanging them in the pups.

Thanks a bunch!
That should get me going.
Any other experience with mag swaps in Jazz or JB welcome too.

Re: humbucker magnet dimensions

Good luck on your new adventure.

But be forewarned...mag swapping is an addiction that is impossible to break. And it leads to harder addictions, like hybridding.

I never thought, in my wildest dreams, that I would ever want to venture into the world of pickup vivisection. Now I can't imagine putting a pup in one of my guitars that isn't a hybrid. My latest is a Demon/'59 hybrid with a UOA5 for the neck of my guitar build I'm currently working on (it will have a Custom/59 with UOA5 in the bridge).

I was able to shake it off and got back to focus on playing the guitar more! ;o) For me the magnet swapping started in and around 2002/2003 or so...It is an addiction for sure!

Re: humbucker magnet dimensions

Consider yourself warned. Don't say I didn't tell you.

Part of being a guitar player Doc...Never 100% happy with our tone and always trying different pedals,amps,strings,picks,pickups....Magnet changes..

I have learned alot over the years about how the magnet changes the overall character of a pickup..It's almost like I now have a pre-concieved notion of how a pickup would sound if I changed to a different magnet...Pretty cool...

As a rule,I didn't know very much about pickups in general, until I joined the forums around 2002 or so...These days I'm an avid SD user in just about every guitar I own...I only own 2 guitars ( The Teles} and they have Fender CS pickups in them..All of my other guitars have at least one SD pickup in place..

Thanks to alot of people on these forums!

Re: humbucker magnet dimensions

Bringing this thread back up. I would like to confirm that 2.5" magnets will fit in a SH-5 - Standard humbucker and not a trembucker?
Off hand seems like they would be long. I do not have the guitar with the sh-5 in front of me.

the 2-1/2" are what you'll find in both standard space and trem spaced.
