Humbucker Pole Screw Experiment.

Some back story info... I recently put a set of Antiquity humbuckers in my Les Paul. Like some, I found the bridge pickup a little weak and bright and the neck a tad muddy using overdrive. My first move was to replace the magnets. I used ReWinds. Their bright A2 in the neck and an unoriented A5 in the bridge. Now the neck is clear under overdrive and the bridge has a little grunt. The only problem was the bridge was still a little ice-pickey. Rolling down the tone helped, but not enough.
So, I replaced the pole screws with 1010 lower carbon versions from Addiction FX. Bingo! It still sounds bright, airy and has presence, but the ice pick is gone. I’m not blaming the pickups. They sound great! It’s probably the guitar. Anyway, I thought I would share my experience in case others were interested in doing the swap. I like it!

Yes, the higher the carbon, the brighter the tone.

Thanks. Yes, I knew that. What I didn’t know was what comes stock. Duncan doesn’t disclose that. I could have been replacing the screws with ones of the same type, and not gotten any change. It was a bit of a gamble.
