Humbucker SC coil tap color codes?

Hello, back after a hiatus (or hernia?) to the forum with a question for an amp customer (expecting me to actually the answer and help re-wire his Strat).... Im calling in the experts...!

To insure that the front coil of all three PUPS in the Strat Everything Axe set is the one used (tapped) when he throws ONE DPDT toggle (not push pull), how do I know based on wire color code for which coil?

....Hope to only wire this for him one time. In SC split mode, he thinks the front coil (closet to the neck) will have better bottom end than tapping the three coils closest to the bridge, which is probably correct!

I know (actually, I think.....based on other Duncans IVe wired) I tie the red/white and use them to split, but will a different color combination do what he wants or should the standard red/white do it? The Duckbucker confueses me the most, since it has to be wired for hum canceling in the 2 and 4 switch position when in SC mode? Help? Any advise or help is appreciated

Re: Humbucker SC coil tap color codes?

Welcome back Eric.

For the JB jr and the little 59, using the red/white wires connected to ground will leave the coil closest to the neck on, no problems there.

The issue comes when splitting the Vintage Rails. Because the VR has only 3 pole piece areas covered with each coil, splitting the VR will leave 3 strings without any coverage by the pickup.

Not only that but splitting all three pickups to the north coil (closest to neck) would not be hum cancelling in the 2 and 4 positions.

If he was looking for brighter tones from splitting he might want to consider wiring the JB jr and lil59 in parallel using 2 dpdt switches and leaving the VR wired in parallel all the time.

He has a couple of options with that set of pickups, just not the one he was hoping for.

Issue of the duckbucker really not being splittable aside, this diagram is done for you. It uses the south coil of the middle pickup for hum-free notch positions: Diagram.

Re: Humbucker SC coil tap color codes?

Many Thanks...I take it the Duckbucker is not splittable...does that also hold true for the more recently produced DBers?? I'll go ahead and wire per the schemo and hope the front coil is the one used (tho I have a feeling its going to be the rear coil (:sigh:) with the DPDT switch in SC mode?
Again thx for the support page wiring schemo!

You can split a Duckbucker, the new models have 4 conductor wiring. You just don't want to.

If your dpdt connects the red/white wires to ground you will leave the coils closest to the neck hot.
