humbucker upgrade for Jazz

Hi everyone, I want to upgrade the humbuckers of my cheap Ibanez archtop/jazz AG 75. The Ibz super 58´s seem to be very good (they are in the better guitars), but I want something similar. As far as I see there are a few other options : Gibson´s 57 classic and S.D´s Alnico II (APH-1 AND TBAPH-1) . Can you please comment on my choices and also if you consider any other SD humbucker for jazz tone. thanx.

APH-1 AND TBAPH-1 . are these two a neck & bridge positions ? .....ah , I guess APH-1 for both positions, and "TB" means something else : in photo I see different connection ???

A Jazz set would be great. SL and A2 pro are good choices as well. TB means Trembucker, they are intended to use with tremolo equipped guitars and only bridge models are made.

IME, an APH1 set with an A3 in the neck should be an excellent choice.

I have a Gibson L5 copy with this very set and I couldn't be happier.

Seth Lovers are the best set I've found for a great jazz tone. Beautiful, airy highs, a nice clear but warm tone. I play mostly in jazz circles, and I know a lot of guys who use Seth Lovers exclusively in their jazz boxes and semi-hollows.

+1. For warm vintage tones, with lots of texture and dynamics, Seth's are heard to beat.

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

another question is do you think it´s going to make a considerable improvement on a low end guitar ( bottom of line= cheap) ? ...

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

it´s going to make a considerable improvement on a low end guitar?

Sure it will. There's a difference between a "cheap" guitar and a "low cost".

A Seth set will make you VERY happy. My modded set will work better for the more specialized Jazz player, with bigger Jazz boxes than yours.

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

ive have an aph in the neck of my 175. Ive been playing that axe as my main gigging machine for 10 years. Its a good sound.

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

Thanx again to every one , it´s ordered , a Seth Lovers SH-55 chrome for neck position for my simple Ibanez AG-75 and hopping it´s going to make a big difference taking in count the quality difference between both ;-).

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

Well, yes, very happy with new Seth Lovers in Neck position, it has definitevly opened up the sound, less plastic, more piano and clearer. Also notice the sensibility alot, it reacts to you´re playing. Just one little thing , it seems it does´nt like being partener with the Ibanez bridge pickup, I mean in middle position it sounds not too good, is this because of combining Alnico II with a ceramic ??

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

Their are many factors to a pups sound and the magnets are just one factor but the EQ from the bridge pup probably doesn't match well with the Seth.

Re: humbucker upgrade for Jazz

I´ve been offered a Dimarzio PAF 103.( http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/humbuckers/paf-36th-anniversary ) . Recently I changed my neck p/u and have a Seth Lovers : GREAT. The combination with the original ceramic in bridge does´nt work very nicely , I wonder if this dimarzio PAF 103 (although a neck p/u also) alnico 5 will get on nicely with my Seth (alnico2).??? what should I expect ? any wiring modifications ? what about a wiring with just one volume & one tone? thanx.

- Those Ibanez PU's of yours have ceramic magnets, which is a poor choice for a hollowbody. Don't know what they were thinking.

- A good A2 vintage-output HB is ideal for your guitar, like A2P, Seth, BB, etc. Some of us think that Gibson '57's are kind of dull and muddy; there's certainly better PU's for less money.

- As has been mentioned here many times, Duncan 'Jazz" PU's are relatively bright and don't have a lot of character. Not what most people associate with a jazz tone. The name doesn't really fit.

- Upgrading PU's in a mid-price guitar is the best thing you can do to improve it's tone.

Go ahead and try it. It should sound better than what you currently have in the bridge. Also remember it isn't the mag you dislike it's the pup as a whole.
