This post has probably been made more times than I can imagine.

Hey...I'm new...give me a break.

I'm looking for your collective expert advice on which humbuckers give the best noise*(*in my case) for blues.
More towards Chicago than Texas.

They will be for a semi-hollowbody. It will not be a high end axe.

I'm considering SD Custom Custom but I can't decide....so
....let the opinion games begin.

Thanks to all that read this and please consider posting a reply.

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

My favorite blues pickups are the Rio Grande Bastard and Fat Bastard.... They are a P-90 in a normal humbucker slot... In the SD lineup I dont have any personal expierence with the custom custom but I liked the AP-2 for blues work.

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

I REALLY prefer single coils for chicago/texas or any kinds of blues, preferably Alnico 5s too. But if your going humbucker. In a semi hollowbody, depending on the wood, id go p90s or p90 phat cats.

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

I'd go with Seth Lovers for a semi hollow . Those PUs really sound huge and are nicely PAF oriented. What's better for a blues tone ?

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

Seths would be pretty good....

Alnico II Pros would rock as a slightly darker blues tone.

Custom custom also works as a higher output blues pickup.

Some people swear by Pearly Gates but personally I don't like them...

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

I'm a blues player and in my semi hollowbody I use the Custom Custom with a neck Seth Lover. That's a killer combo for blues because I get clear warm tones from the neck pickup for both chords and solos and then the Custom Custom pushes my amp beautifully for a more overdriven rock/blues (British blues?) tone.

For vintage Gibson paf tones a set of Seth Lovers would be hard to beat. Or a set of Pearly Gates, Antiquities or 59's.

The 59's would be closest to what most of the guys were using in thier Gibson 335, 345 and 355 guitars throughout the 60's and 70's: BB, Albert King, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Elvin Bishop, etc.

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

I loved the Seth's in my Epi Sheraton for ALL styles of music.

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

Thanks for all the responses. Really appreciated !!

I have an Epi 56 GoldTop reissue with P90's ...just got it recently. Thought I should mention this as there are quite a few recommendations to try P90's.

The amp I'm using is a Fender Princeton Reverb (1976).

Thanks again to all.

I'm going to try and fix up the poll to reflect the responses to date. Not sure if I can figure out how. Your responses are what count, not the statistical analysis.

my pics are in order, Antiquity, great sounding PAF very full and rich. Seth, a bit brighter than the antiquity but still unpotted and very balanced. 59, nice thick tone and closest to some of the blues players mentioned above.

Re: Humbuckers for Blues...Again...Sorry

So far, this is what I'm considering: (in order of priority)

1) Seth Lovers

2) '59's

3) Antiquities ...I know the least about these pickups but they get a fair amount of mention.

Please, can anyone tell me more about the Antiquity pickups? all I know so far is in the reply from mrfjones

I could change my mind (don't we all ?? !!) after pondering this more and more.

The Seth Lovers seem to cost a bit more and I'm not sure why...maybe just supply and demand ?

Thanks for all the help. Great forum.

P.S. I tried to get the poll "adjusted" but no luck. Sorry.
